After a weeks worth of testing I have come up with what I think is the best combination for a 20# and 30# line setup. The goal was to have all the pieces break at a similar loads and achieve as close to full strength as possible. Line size was also a factor.

If any of you guys can come up with a better combo, please respond to this thread with it.

Best 20# setup:
  • Individual line tests:
    • 50# PP broke at 24lbs
    • 20# Izor xxx .018 Dia. broke at 24lbs
    • 30# Gold Label .017 Dia. broke at 19lbs
  • Total strength test:
    • Braid to mono tied with 20 turn FG knot
    • Mono to Flouro tied with 3 turn surgeons knot(Seaguar knot would have worked as well)
    • Flouro to 2/0 Mustad hook tied with 5 turn Improved Trilene knot
    • Total strength: 18lbs
      • Flouro broke just below surgeons knot
Best 30# setup:
  • Individual line test:
    • 60# hollow braid - didn’t test
    • 30# Izor xxx .022 Dia. broke at 36lbs
    • 40# Gold Label .020 Dia. broke at 30lbs
  • Total strength test:
    • Braid to mono tied with 20 turn FG knot
    • Mono to Flouro tied with 3 turn Seaguar knot(Surgeons was significantly weaker)
    • Flouro to 2/0 Mustad hook tied with 5 turn Improved Trilene knot
    • Total strength: 28lbs
      • Flouro broke above Trilene knot
      • Surgeons knot resulted in 21lb total strength
      • 4 turn Trilene resulted in 24lb total strength
Notes:
  • All testing was done with a Rapala 50lb spring fish scale. I verified it's accuracy by lifting a 15lbs and 30lbs weight. Both measured spot on.
  • The braid choice is not that important as long as its breaking strength is greater than the total strengths listed.
  • 20# Blue Label .016 Dia. Broke at 14lbs
  • Knots were down selected by testing all common knots
  • The FG knot never failed
  • The Seaguar knot never failed
  • The Improved Trilene never failed
  • I did not test other brands of flouro or mono or Braid.
  • The weak link was always the flouro.
  • Special thanks to Walt(yessokk) for introducing me to the improved Trilene and giving some other great advice.
