Came across a full size floating telephone pole just inside the 425 today. Luckily birds were sitting on it to let me know something was there but would hate for someone to hit it at night.
    Coordinates as of 3:30pm today.

Nice job looking out. Not trying to be a jerk. But do you think the CG gives a rat's tail about a floating log? It's the ocean, there are thousands of "natural hazards" floating in our waterways.

Did they send out a "navigation" warning after you called in the GPS cord? It's not like a partly submerged boat or container that poses "legal" liability to some extreme.

I've towed in pilings that were close and inshore, and removed large boards...but there is some acceptance of when you go out on the ocean, and even more risk when you go offshore., The CG can't be expected to notify or monitor all offshore hazards. JMO

    That's a "toad". :D

Harbor patrol may be able to tow it in if it's close to port. I've called them in on dingys, dead dolphin, etc. Never a pole, tho!

Worse than poles floating horizontally, entirely on the surface, are the bobbing 'Dead Heads'. These are full size, huge logs, likely lost off a wood hauler ship or barge. They've been in the water a long time, saturated with water and bob vertically just barley breaking the surface. The Point Conception area is known for these.

Please report to Coast Guard of any navigational hazards. Coast guard cares about the safety of our workers at sea and will then notify everyone channel 16 periodically if potentially a hazard is reported. More known if there is a hazard in front of port entrances you’ll hear more often but even offshore, it could pose a threat to any boat with the most advance technology and reporting could save someone’s life.

Very optimistic but pessimistic at the same time.

We call those widow makers! nasty and they frequently appear up north as well after big rain storms. Hard to run at night knowing those things are out there.

Not trying to be a jerk, Is BD telling us not to report hazards? The very first Coast Guard coarse tells us to report all hazards and CG will figure it out. If you see a hazard or hit a hazard you call CG and then call out on the fishing channels to alert the guys running behind you

@Hardcor I get it. I understand. I just don’t think the CG needs to know about every log of tree floating out there. Its part of the risk of going offshore.
The CG may say thanks for the 411, but I doubt they broadcast it on the VHF.

I rarely hear a broadcast about a navigation hazard unless it’s near a harbor entrance or in a navigational waterway, or something really big like a partially submerged boat, dead whale or container. And that’s not very often either.

Boaters want to call it in. Cool.

I'm a 100 ton Captain, first thing in nav general about floating Hazard is to report type, and location. It can save lives .

Thank you for that Captain, I trust the Coastguard too
I assume that is directed at me. Where did say “I don’t trust the coastguard.”

All I am saying is I don’t think the coast guard is broadcasting the coordinates of every piece of debris floating out there.

If people want to call it in, great.

DAMN RIGHT and GOOD JOB reported these. We had a 5day on BG90 cancel when it snagged a log right off Pt.Loma with a load of Boy Scouts the night before, ripped the prop strut from hull and started taking on water! They got in, anglers off and made it to the shipyard. Lucky to be close.
Fishing boats are heavy and go down pretty quick with a big log hole in the bow or side!!
I don't see anything wrong with reporting objects this size to others here and the USCG.
All of em of any size. Rather read this than a family drowned hitting a log!! My take.

Want to know how fast a decent sized sailboat with a lead keel can sink miles offshore hitting a log like this?...or some of the other things like garage doors, entire roofs off buildings, more we saw racing from LA to Oahu in the Tranpac Race. We have prior drills prior to race on how fast the crew can get the locator beacon and 8man life raft over the side w/life jackets on...seconds to minutes. Got to get away from the mast and rigging too or instantly go down with the boat. Not a fun thing, especially driving the boat at night with an observer. It's a big ocean out there.
Here's a great locator for personal/boat use in sinking emergency....
