Spent the 2021 Labor Day holiday weekend camping in Sunset Bay State Park and fishing off Cape Arago between Charleston and Bandon. Couldn’t ask for better weather conditions aside from early morning fog and less than 100 yard visibility when headed out of port. The sun broke through the marine layer opening up one of the nicest days I’ve experienced on the Central Oregon Coast.

Ran 20 miles south from Charleston to a nearshore reef just west of Bandon after setting 6 crab pots baited with yellow tail rockfish carcasses in 35’ of water off Cape Arago in a protected cove that has a sand for a bottom.

Caught a very nice 30” nearshore halibut in 210’ of water west of Bandon pretty good start to the day. Gave up on a slow halibut bite after picking up a Wolf Eel (caught and released) that took a black label herring on the same drift as the pacific halibut. Moved closer to structure and jiged w/ a homemade 5” length 3/4” copper pipe jig with a Gulp glow/white grub on a double dropper loop rig with (2) red/yellow shrimp flies tipped with squid to get a mixed rockfish bag: black, red vermilion (released), canary, china (released) and a couple of cabezon to round out the fill of the cooler. Pulled the (6) crab pots on the way in and found limits of tasty dungeness crab!

P.S. I included a few bonus pictures from a hike around Sunset Bay...Shhh, don’t tell anyone! It only rains in Oregon! ;-)

I tell everyone it rains and blows everyday on the Oregon coast. Miserable place to live. I did my 154th trip of the year into the nasty awful ocean today. This place sucks. Antifa on every street corner.
wolf eels. Neat to kill and eat once. They taste good. Not lingcod good, but good. They'll take your finger off if not careful!

It really was a magical day on the water and we were blessed with the ocean’s bounty. I’ll never forget the eel snapping his mouth shut whenever I tried to unhook it... Those dog teeth looked extremely dangerous and scary. Rather than mess around with him we gave him the hook and sent it back down!

I’ll be thinking and laughing about SoCal’s “greatest tuna fisherman” a.k.a. Aravon “the biggest loser” when I’m sporting my new AFTCO Reaper Technical Sweatshirt! 🤣🤙🏻🏆🥇📸

Are you kidding me? Dude comes over to a great and much needed post on the Oregon forum and ruins it because he didn't win?
I don't post a lot of pictures and reports because I'm doing it everyday and don't think much about it. But, but, but, when I'm relaxing at night I truly enjoy seeing others success and pics.
Keep posting k-dog. Here's a 32# and 22# from the weekend. Dudes first ever ling and ling limit. Weighed on a weak assed ryobi digital scale.
