My buddy chartered a 2-day on the Aztec But we only needed 1-1/2 lol. Day 1 was a slow start, with the first fish coming over at 9am (mine!). The weather was like albacore fishing, cool, windy, choppy. Captain Greg loaded a LOT of bait and worked hard to find a spot. BTW, that guy can fish! He must have hooked and handed off 30 fish to our group of novice-average fishermen, turning the discouraged into thrilled. We had a slow pick with moments of pandemonium that improved as the conditions declined. By the afternoon the action was great and I was looking for a shower and food as I had 10 on the boat and was totally exhausted. After a great tri-tip dinner like a fancy restaurant I headed to the rack about 10 so I could get another 3 hours of sleep. Ok, maybe 2 hours as John snores like a hybrid freight train and fog horn. I checked the regs for Mexico and that is not grounds for murder there so he still lives.

Day 2 started great, with a total frenzy that left us limited and calling it quits at 9:30a. We handed off the spot to the Freedom and hung out long enough to watch them go cluster a few moments later. The 220 yellowfin were 15-20 average I’d guess, and tough little bastards in those windy conditions. Biggest fish was 35 (also mine!) but they didn’t have a jackpot...just my luck. We got 1 Skipjack on the troll, the only troll fish, and 1 random open water dorado came over the rail.

Butt hooked sardines on 15-20 pound with smaller hooks seemed to be the key. I broke off 3 in a row on 15 so I respooled to 20 and solved the problem. After straightening 2 light wire hooks I listened to Captain Greg and went heavier without a noticeable change in action, but better landing results. We chummed a ton of sardines to keep the fish close, but had to move the boat a few times to get the baitball out from under us. 90%+ of the fish came on live bait, with a handful on small metal jigs. I landed almost as many Motrin as fish...

Went right by you guys as you were heading in. Best part is when the Navy called Greg on the Aztec and told him they were changing their course to go go around him.

Wow your trip sounds great! I'm hoping to hop on the Aztec in October, I was just wondering how they treat your catch? Did they take good care of them, spiked, bled and rsw? Are they kept in the RSW until you reach the docks and unload? Thanks in advance and congrats on your awesome trip!
