Booked this trip weeks ago for a bluefin trip. I thought it would be cool because the boat left at 11 a.m. Setting up two nights of flatfall fishing. It turned out the bulk of the bluefin have moved southwest towards the Cortez bank. The Captain heard they were not liking the fin bait so we went to San Clemente island to make squid. No luck on the squid but we managed to catch some live flying fish for the kite. Weather turned really rough and it took practicality all night to make it to Cortez. The weather got worse with short 8 to 10 ft swells at short intervals. The wind was blowing one way and the current was going the other way. This made it difficult for flat falls and torpedo sinker rigs to sink. At about 3 p.m. We finally found a school that started responding to our bait. The kite rig went off and a 200 + blue fin was caught. Two guys got hooked up on bait. One was spooled
and the other angler had a single speed senator 4/0 with 60 lb. after an hour they spiliced into his setup with heavier gear and shortly after the 60 lb snapped. The kite goes off again and my number is called. Go figure. Sometimes it is better to be lucky then good. I feel so fortunate to have the experience of fighting such a beautiful beast. I lost one last year on the prop and at my age 68, I did not think I would get another opportunity. The rail was definitely my friend. Props to the captain and crew. One of the top boats that target blue fin for sure. The fish taped out at 235......... Thanks for reading....Jughead.......

All the fillets from the two fish were split equally between all the anglers. Everybody took fish home!

    Bright lights and big nets.
That and there was Chris’s “American History X” method when a flier hits the deck. :smash:

A big prop to Justin Ryan a crew member on the Aztec. His knowledge and fishing experience is second to none. If you want help rigging he will get his crimp kit out go sit at the galley table and set your whole rig up. Thank you Justin for all your help and advice.....Jughead...

Way to go Jughead sounds like you & Justin were a great combo! I’m headed out on Monday’s Trip...weather is looking similar. Very light winds “forecasted” at SCI but harder out at Cortes. Seas anywhere from 9-12’ at 12-14 seconds. How did the boat handle the weather and would you suggest some heavier flatfalls? I’m going to pick up a 320g and maybe a 500g if I find it. Were you guys fly lining sardines or attaching torpedos??
