I'm really surprised that you don't have a store selling Avet reels in the whole Pensacola area. You've checked ALL of the tackle stores?

I have several Avets and like them, if you can cast conventional reels then you will like them. The MXL is a nice medium-sized reel and the G2 level has more drag. I wouldn't choose an Avet for kings and spanish, it would be like taking a 7mm rifle to hunt whitetail deer, but you would be glad to have it if you went after bigger, tougher fish.

Yes all of the tackle stores here and in orange beach have all Said thay dont carry them cause theres to many options and models but "we can order it for you" witch does me no good . Lot of out other shops closed up over the past few years also .. the avet has a faster Retrieve rate than the TLD15 or 20 . Have lost some big kings not being able to pick up slack line fast enough. We also get monster red snapper that like to come up to get live cigs when bump trolling them over wrecks . I'd like to stay with a lever drag about the size of a tld 15 or 20 . The avet was just what I came across

Well, you won't go wrong. I got my first Avet (HX5/2) almost 15 years ago, it is still working fine a hundred big fish later. The smallest I used was an SX, I thought that it would cast better than the bigger ones, and having a lever drag would be helpful in stopping yellowtail racing for the rocks. Nope. I sold it. The MXL is a good all-around size, and in all sizes that they offer it, the G version has more drag and is just a really good looking reel.

If you are fishing vertically, then the Avet will be fun. If you are casting, then either a spinner or a star drag or a large baitcaster like a Lexa will be easier to use. I personally don't care for the TLD models, they just don't fit my hands right. But I have big paws.

The MXL is smaller in capacity than a TLD 15. TLD is rated for 700 yds of 50# power pro and the MXL is rated for 580 yds of 50#. Either should be plenty. I have a MXJ that's one of my favorites loaded with 50# braid and a 25# topshot.

You’re looking at two extremes when you add big snapper to the mix. Spanish aren’t much of a challenge, they’re not big, but both kings and Spanish need light smooth drags as to not to pull hooks. Big snapper need brute force stopping power to no wreck you. Although a big avet fan they are not great brute force reels unless you go raptor, more $$ and more than $250. I would be looking at Penn 25 or 40ln2s for sure. jmo.

How big in size is the mlx ? What other reel is it comparable to in size ? I do a lot of slow trolling with live bait here

So spool size is little smaller , what about the actual size overall ?

True , not often it happens but bot like it's a loss if I loose it anyway . We only get like 20 days for snapper here a year .

I prefer narrower reels myself, less wobble on the retrieve. I’ll take a larger diameter in exchange.

Just remember that the reel is the most important part of the system. I have three times as many rods as reels. Reels can serve multiple purposes and you can change rod strength, length, action, etc. as future situations arise. Most multi-decade experienced fishermen don't lock a reel onto a particular rod and leave it. Your reels should be stored in the bottom of your bedroom closet with your best shoes, and for the same reason that you don't put your dress shoes in the garage.

If matching a reel to a favorite rod, I suggest that you take that rod to the best fishing tackle store in your county and then get the counterman's help in trying on various reels that he suggests. You will find at least one that balances right and just feels good in your hands. Make a note of that model, and then you have the basic dimensions and weight to start doing your research.

I worked for years at a major store chain here in SoCal in the fishing department and helped scores of fishermen find those matches. Jaime at Bob Sands and several other regular posters here on the Forums do it the same. Yes, there will be some who learn and then go out and try to get a discounted price, but many more develop a real relationship with a store that actually provides good customer service and accurate info. So no worries about going to a real fishing store, as opposed to the tackle aisle at Walmart.

Here’s a thought. If there is a large fishing show close to you call Avet and see if the will have a booth. They usually, out west, have all their reels and you can check it out. Bring you TLD so you can compare.

If not, time for a road-trip down to Orlando for ICAST! We just had the PCS show and have the Bart Hall show next week. Avet didn’t/isn’t attending either this year.

The part that sucks is here in pensacola NO ONE sells or carries avet .. iv had a tld15 and shimano speedmaster 2 sat on this rod and thay where both about the size/balance I like . If the torium was lever drag I'd go with one of those

Yeah, I thought a lot of the 6:1 gear ratio reels were for king fishing! They work well for our yo-yo fishing too!
