I have come to the realization my Avet HX 5/2 is not the best option for a 60# bait set up. My JX6/3-MC Raptor has 50 # top shot and would probably hadle the 60 better. thoughts or reel suggestions

I have a bunch of reels for fishing 50 and 60 lb at Guadalupe. I keep buying new stuff thinking eventually I will find the perfect reel. I have hx's, hx raptors, hxw raptors, jx's, jx raptors, lx raptors, mxl raptors, fathom 25, 30 and 40's, Accurate dauntless 600's and 600n's, and Talica 16's and 12's. In my experience the non raptor hx fishes 50lb with no problem. When you start fishing 60lb with heavy drag you are getting up pretty high in the drag range and you can start to get handle binding.
The hx raptor fishes 60lb with no problem but it is kind of big and heavy to hold for hours and it doesn't cast as well as some of the smaller reels. The JX raptor is a really nice reel. It is small and lite and it casts really well. I use mine mainly for 50lb. You could fish 60lb on it but for me the 6/3 gear ratio is a little high to get the most power on a big fish.
I personally like the Accurate dauntless 600n and the Shimano Talica 12 for 60lb. The size is just right, they hold plenty of line for most fishing situations and they have a lot of cranking power. If you are fishing really long soaks like happens at Guadalupe you can use the dauntless 600 or the talica 16. They are the same reels as the 600n and the 12 only a little wider for more line capacity.
I haven't tried the Penn Torque or the Okuma's, I guess they are next on the list.

I have both reels and love them both. I have fished both with 60# successfully. With big 60-100 pound YFT the JX Raptor was the king time and time again. Bluefin in the larger size usually get the JX Raptor with 50 to get bit. Plenty of drag as I set it and even more when Blake jammed it to full. Looked great inside after many big fish. That said my goto yoyo reel is the HX 5/2. I just get bit well on that speed with full size 6x. The drag is set very tight for tails and I win a lot.
Both kick butt!

I have a JX raptor, HXJ and HWX. All can fish bait - just depends on the scenario.

I did however took my 80# izor off of the JX and spooled with 500yds of 65# Max4. The JX is a small, especially on the long soak.
My HXj can throw flat falls, fish deep drop and is good for fishing macs. Not so such those tiny deens,
HXW is for macs, deeper drop flat falls, flyers has killed tune to 145#.

I had an HX but sold it for the HXW purely for capacity.

I use both my HX for trolling. I wouldn't want to use them for bait. Too clunky.

You might consider the HXJ or HXJ Raptor for a dedicated 60 lb setup. I really like the narrow reels. Feels better.

How much drag do you set on the non raptor HX for 50# and how often do you have to replace the pinion bearing?

I keep my HX filled with 65lb JB solid and I usually only fish around 15 to 17 lbs of drag. I have had the reel for 7 or 8 years now and I have never had to replace the pinion bearing. I have 2 HX raptors now so the regular HX doesn't get much use. I usually bring it on trips as a backup in case something happens to one of my HX raptors.

The pinion bearing on Avets goes out when you use more drag than Avet recommends. It puts a side load on the pinion bearing and it gets wrecked.

Yes that’s my understanding as well. When the handle gets harder to turn when the drag is engaged the pinion bearing is getting ruined. I have a HX raptor and a HX non raptor and both handles get hard to turn. I am only concerned with the non-raptor and I am looking for a drag setting where I can set it and the pinion gear will be fine

To find the max drag on most of my Avet reels I get up on a second story balcony or similar location about 6 feet above the ground and start letting line fall off of the reel in free spool. I then turn up the preset until the spool is no longer freely turning under the pull of line hanging off of it. That tells me that things are starting to bind. I then back off the preset a bit. So far I have not damaged a reel doing this.

Or just start out by setting the drag at strike to about 2/3's of Avets rating for a given reel and go from there.

I have a JX Raptor, LX Raptor and HX Raptor. I have caught multiple 140lb+ BFT with the LX Raptor on 60lb, In my opinion, the JX doesn't have the line capacity for the biggins. You can certainly catch them, but more capacity on the LX

I have read this for years and have only changed two pinion bearings on my dozen or so Avets. I have used Avets continually and almost exclusively for about a decade. I always use lots of drag and when deckhands check as you fight a fish they never add more. Beware that some folks who DO NOT EVEN OWN an Avet seem to wish to spread fake news.

That’s good to know. My non raptor was a gift and the pinion was shot when it was given to me so I had it serviced and fixed and haven’t had a problem since but the thought lingers

This is a large YFT caught on a regular, non Raptor, JX 6/3. Fish like this are not unusual to catch without ruining the pinion bearing. I DO service my reels after every trip so if one waits until the reel acts funny to service it their mileage may vary.

I had a big Sealion grab a YT and get hooked on the 6x fishing with 60# on an HX Raptor. Couldn't break it off. Deckhand thumbed the spool, gave drag knob a big twist and shoved the lever back to full. I don't know how much drag it had but probably over the max 'suggested'. Finally broke it off but that dog will remember me and probably still has a 6x lip adornment! Reel was still smooth when drag was set back to 20#.

I fish 20# on the SXJ, 25# on the MXJ, 30# on the SX Raptor, 40# on the JX 6/3, 50# on the JX Raptor, 60# on the HX Raptor and 100# on the HXW Raptor. The Non-raptors are the only ones I take care with in terms of drag.

You are correct. Use 60#on the JX-raptor and 50# on the HX non raptor. If the JX is full of spectra capacity shouldn't be an issue unless you hook into something that would spool the HX aslo

Sold my Parker. You can find me on the Red Rooster.
The unique design of the Raptor takes quite a bit of stress off the pinion bearing; I've seen only one bad Raptor pinion bearing in my shop since the Raptors came out. The very first Avets did ship with some bad bearings; this is the likely source of the bad Avet pinion bearing story. By and large the vast majority of the Avet pinion bearings I replace is because of saltwater intrusion. In my shop the reel that comes in most often with bad pinion bearings is the Shimano TLDII series. Almost all of them need a new pinion bearing. I think this is because people fill them with 80# braid and use them for halibut.
