Well since avet likes to update their reels every week I am again without a match. This happened with the MX reels I have 3 versions....:hali_parkutuli:

So I have an exw 4/02 which they no longer make for use on Halibut up here in AK. What would be better the Pro30 which was meant to replace the exw or the HX wide 2 speed?

I'm not familiar with Juneau area halibut but around KTN we rarely fished over 200', the HX would work. Now that I'm stuck in Oregon I'm forced to fish 500' and deeper and use an EXW 4/02. Repair parts are still available for the Avet 4/0.

Hi Sobie -- I'll be using an HX this summer. It has more than enough drag and is considerably lighter than the 30. One possible issue is that the high gear (5.4 to 1) may be a bit too high if you're fishing 400 feet deep with 3 or 4 pounds of lead (maybe too much speed and not enough power) but with 2 pounds or less, it should be fine.

Yea, but at 2.4 to 1, it would take forever to get up from 400 feet. The old EX4/02 was great because its high was 4 to 1, although I always thought it was heavy for jigging. I've already caught lots of marlin, yellowtail, dorado and wahoo on my HX and am anxious to use it on 'butts this summer. I think the HX is an amazing reel, perhaps the best ever made by Avet.

In my opinion the EX4/2 was an excellent Pacific halibut reel.

i think for the money, the ex 4/02 is the best reel avet made.especially when you could get one for under 300 bucks, theres a new blue ex4/02 at blue marlin chronicles for 330.00.hx is a fine reel in its own right, but lacks the grunt in high gear to haul heavy weights up from the deep.

The HX rocks for halibut fishing (in Norway) and has instantly replaced my EX4/02 for this purpose. This holds true for jigging in up to 300 feet of water.

There may be cases, when the EX has an edge over the HX but that is dependant on personal favors as well as fishing conditions. To make things worse :) the MXL is a strong little hali-buster, too.
