There is no silver lining except maybe for the tribes. Extra returning hatchery fish go to waste. They only use a small number of fish for brood stock. If fish numbers increase we will obviously have more encounters and less opportunity like this year even though the runs are strong. My biggest complaint is WDFW knew encounters were super high early in 10, they could have shut it down till we had a shot at the adults. Encounters are much lower now and the A10 adult fish just started showing in numbers. WDFW has stopped seasons before to allow for opportunity later but for some reason wanted to have A10 shut down early.

The sublegal encounter shutting down chinook is at least a know metric prior to the season starting. Now Coho restriction is bull shit, we don't have a coho quota. Their preseason estimated catch rate for coho doesn't mean shit if the resi fish do well and the ocean run is bigger than forecasted.

And why leave it open at all if sublegal encounters are the real issue. A person is no less likely to catch shakers trolling coho gear than king gear.

Does anyone have any actual details from wdfw on why? They say test fishing the last 2 weeks showed more hatchery fish but we never went over our hatchery quota. And how does that change our sub legal from 122% to 75%?
Smells like they got caught screwing up there data and this is a bone there throwing us to make there mistake go away.

Or did we actually put enough pressure on them? Cause that’s a really good sign if we did. Shows we can make a little difference

Now bring our two coho limit back by Sept if you are going to screw us out of what should be a king fishery.
