what would be the problem if it jams? .223. the bullet does'nt seem to slide up in the chamber it jams on the third to the 7th shot the last it shoved the bullet into the casing. i saw it happen on a buddys gun. i thought they could do hundreds of rounds per minute wtf?

Weak mag spring or maybe a weak buffer spring has the timing off?

What is "good" ammo? Factory? Reloads?

I'm going with bad mag, it could be either a weak spring or the bullet is catching on the front edge of the mag. Certain bullets I.E. hollow points, are notorious for doing this with or without a good mag.

and is new being defined as new to him or fresh out of the box?

Trade it for an AK variant. Unless you need to reach out over 200yds. I'll take an AK over the AR all day.

new out the box. and the mag is about 6 months old and has ammo in it all the time. also it happened with solid tip and hollow point. ammo was given to him by a military buddy who's used it with no problems. that's all i have other than i call it a widow maker. oh can it be the bullet is hitting up high and not sliding in to the chamber? the one i saw was the bolt caught the bullet in the middle like it hit the chamber up high and the bolt got stopped when it pushed the back half of the bullet back down and the top got wedged up high before the barrel.

Even in country (Iraq) I pull all of my ammo and break down the mag weekly, to strech out the mag spring we load them with 27-28 round to stop the full compression it helps to help the spring from sacking out, but if your not shooting it dont store the rounds in it.

The bolt is hitting the round because the spring isn't pushing the round up fast enough to catch the back of the round and push it ino the chamber. The first rounds work because thats when ther is the most preasure on the spring pushing the rounds faster up to get caught by the bolt.

that's my guess too, weak spring action in the mag. only 60 rounds through it too ? keep shooting it, but this should not matter.

Go with p-mag or the h&k mags, as stated before your springs and possibly mag follower are to blame. also learn s.p.o.r.t.s.
