BD Sponsored Trip #2 is a wrap!
This time we headed up to 22nd Street Landing in Long Beach for a 2 Day Trip on The Apollo.
This trip was presented by Submission Fishing, and owner Mike Muto came out to get a piece of the action!
We left the dock a little after 9 PM on Monday night, the boat was loaded with bait so we pointed straight to San Nick to get to the halibut grounds early. There was talk of attempting to make the run down south to find the thicker schools of tuna, but with only 2 days, we opted out of that option. Sounded like a long boat ride to us!
We made multiple drifts from 5am to 11am across the sandy bottom of San Nick, pulling up various size halibut. Plenty of shorts, but also some hogs! Trap rig sardine or squid was the call, probably 75% of the halibut were hooked on sardine. After the bite slowed down, we pushed out to a few different rock piles to load up on some rockfish. The rockfish bite was consistent for hours! Dropper loop squid was the most common technique, but the hottest bite came from the Submission Fishing Jigs! We fished mainly 250+ feet of water, so working those jigs is not for the faint-hearted! But hooking a huge red on the jig is an electrifying feeling!
Toward the end of day 1, Captain Greg heard some chatter on the radio about YT showing up in certain spots of SCI. We decided to make the move out there, to hopefully find some night schools of bigger BFT, and YT during the day. We spent day 2 chasing down schools, but nothing would bite. The schools of tuna were 400+ feet deep (probably feeding on red crab) and they wanted no part of us. We did what any dedicated angler would do, headed back to the rock pile to load up on cod!
Overall, this was an amazing trip. This is a hard-working crew, we highly recommend booking a trip with these guys!!
Thank you Captains Greg & Ryan, deckhands Jay, Dominick & Jonah, and Chef Richie for making this trip rad!
Big shoutout to Mike Muto and Submission Fishing for gearing up the boys and coming along to fish!!
