Met up with a nice guy Andrew from BD, visiting his folks. 3 of us went for overnighter out of HK at Penguin banks. Plan was run the banks late afternoon the dusk, jig bottom of the banks at night, be at P fad at first light to troll. Run the 500 out on the Lanai side of the banks, hit the banks again on the way back to HK. Left HK at 2 on Thurs, with the expectations the wind would shut down. Water was sloppy and windy. Started running the ledge picked up a small mahi right off the bat....big relief. Shortly later, it looked like a small shark was chasing center rigger but luckily lost interest quickly. No other action until bottom of the banks. In 300' of water, hooked into the donkey on the short center coggin. Got all the lines in and he's still taking like. He didn't want to come to the boat, kept taking runs and 1 hr later we got the flying gaff into him. Double gut hooked, leader wrapped around the body and tucked under one of the set hooks...like a lasso. Quartered and put on ice and sun was set. Took a break, motored over and started drift jigging. Andrew and Miles played and called out fish from the sounder. Light tackle, they had some fun, couple of big eye ulnas and kawakawa at @ 75' and a couple of break offs. fluorescent jigs were the key. Bite slowed down and motored out to P, to drift, maybe jig and sleep til dawn. Water still really sloppy and windy off and on. 5 am lines we're out and ran P for a couple of hrs, picking up 1 small ono. Water was finally settling down when we kicked over to the 500fm ledge and ran towards, Lanai. Not much action and of course ran across pilot whales, so we called it quits. Hit the banks again, crossed over and back up Oahu side. After a few knock downs we headed home. Mid channel we had a few more knock downs and brought a really nice ono to the boat, only to loose him with a lil slack in the line. Water was looking really nice by the time we were back. Over all a good trip, everyone got some sleep. Would have been nice to have calmer water for the night but oh well. Good time fishing with Andrew and would have him on the boat any time!
