fishing was slow on the west side for me (march 31st) but we we're catching a couple aku and shibi near V. hooked one aku, it got sharked, but it was a thresher shark, about 6ft (my best guess). when it tried to stun the aku with its tail, it ended up tail hooked. 6ft thresher tail hooked is a good fight, then, straight down from the boat, the fight got easy. and we brought in a thresher tail. our shark got sharked. i dont know what hit him on the way in, but i assume it was big, and there was a huge shadow below the boat. assuming it was a mako or something, but not sure. just wondering how common this is. i've never heard of it before. i'll post pictures of the chomped off tail as soon as i get them onto the computer.

Sounds pretty crazy. Must've been big whatever it was.

interesting... I was near V bringing in a mahi about 8 years ago and something hit it very hard - snapped a 10/0 hook at the base, and hook was in good shape (no external or internal corrosion) - always wondered what it was but assumed it was a big shark

I got guys who paddle out in kaena west side. They hook up to sharks often. On his last trip out, he hooked onto a 7 feet white tip. Fight was good, then it went dead weight. Ended up bringing in only 1/4 of the shark. Scary shit.

sounds like the shark that was circling that boat few months back outside yokohamas. circlin a big donkey on the boats deck at the time. in other words, be careful out there... was a gw.

Off Hawaii it was probably a bigeye thresher which are not as tasty as the common thresher we're most familiar with. But they're still tasty to another shark.

i have caught and eaten thresher out here, yes tasty. but we were definately not looking for sharks. we lost a couple other shibis to sharks that day too. i was thinking large mako or tiger myself, cause i thought gw were pretty rare out here. oh well, i guess we'll never actually know. thanks for all the opinions, and it's crazy that some of you have heard of this happening before. makes me not wanna do a swim call out there, that's for sure.

One day off the 32 we couldn't keep out of the Sharks. Every other fish would get raked, we'd move and they'd still get chased down by the Makos. That is until we saw around a 750-1000 lber jump close by. All the lil Sharks went "Poof". We told some guys diving what we saw and they didn't seem to care.
