I was reading the reports the last couple of weeks it's been hit or miss but ive been dieing to get out. I have a couple of trips planed but couldn't weight until June or July. I was browsing Point Loma's website actually to see if the New lo Ann had a trip at that point they hadn't. So I ended up booking a trip on the American Angler I fished the AA a couple years back and had a good experience. As far fishing goes Caption Brian called us into the galley and informed us he would be heading south about 120 miles. He had some Intel form another long range boat who had success working his way back up the line. He wanted to avoid the crowd at our local banks. Motored down all night woke up at 4:45 around 5 Brian said he was marking fish. I grabbed my flat fall 130 hollow to 15 feet 130 floro. After about 10 minutes of grinding the guy next to me got bit soon after I got bit but before I could tell fresh one I was off. I think a few bait fish were taken on that stop one guy hooked a big one on a spinning rod with 30 lb test after about an hour he lost it at gaff. Around 8 we went serching it wasnt long and we were back on a school. In typical Bluefin fashion it blow up on the chum we would hook one or two and they would vanish. We found puttling fish boiling fish all very tough to approach. The small bait and flat calm conditions didnt help much either. I stuck with 40 all morning trying not to end up like the spinning rod guy. Around 1:00 we ran into a school of fish with a ton of birds it wanted to play at this point becides a few small kelp yellows I hadn't had a bite so I grabbed my 25 lb set up talica 10 Phoenix rod ended up getting bit on the slide about 30 minutes later a 55 lb BF hit the deck fish kicked my ass on the 25 lb. Unfortunately that would be my only tuna for the day. I think the boat ended up with 19 total jack pot fish cought on a flat fall was probably about 90 pounds. I cant say enough about the crew of the AA great group of guys good food decent fishing. I will be going on a longer trip abord the American Angler.
