What an amazing week we had, both inland and offshore. There are lots of marlin just south of the lighthouse…black, blue and stripe as well as sailfish…you name it, the billfish are out there chasing bait. Live bait, dead bait and lures too. Wahoo stayed hot on the bite taking ballyhoo and rapalas south of El Rincon, all the way to Los Frailes. Bottom fishing has also been great this week… lots of beautiful snappers, cabrillas and other smaller species, but the real highlight this week has been the roosterfish action on live and also artificial bait in close to shore.

The water temps range in the low to mid 80s with not much wind. Overcast skies till the afternoons have helped make for a really beautiful week here weather wise and the sightseeing has been amazing. We’re seeing turtles, mako, thrasher and hammerhead sharks, schools of dorado and manta rays and lots of roosterfish and jacks.

Christopher and Danniella Vecsey visited us from Orange Beach Alabama. This was their first time here and it turned out to be the trip of a lifetime. It was a pleasure to host them. They provided us with this account of their trip.

“So, this was our first time to Baja and I’ve had my eyes on the East Cape for a long time. The quieter scenes, open beaches and freedom to roam was very appealing, but above all things we were attracted to, it was the Roosterfish that truly brought us here.

My wife Danniella and I stayed at the Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort, a family owned operation in Buena Vista, about 45 minutes North/Northeast of the San Jose Del Cabo. The staff there is amazing. You’re treated like family throughout your stay and they really go above and beyond to make sure your stay is a great one. The food at the hotel restaurant is outstanding as well and they’ll prepare your catches various ways.

We brought several travel rods with us and hit the beaches both on foot and by ATV every day of our stay. Fishing from the sand and exclusively using artificials, we caught and released several Roosterfish, various species of Snapper, Grouper, Jacks and more. It was light tackle paradise. We mostly threw Topwater poppers, jerkbaits and spoons as well as mixing in fly fishing periodically. We did a lot of running around on the ATV and between combing the beaches searching for cruising Roosterfish and exploring the trails along the East Cape, there was never a dull moment.

We fished two days aboard the “Nath&Mich” with Captain Omar Sandez. The first day we mostly trolled and then did some Rooster fishing in close. We caught many Dorado up to 35lbs or so, a 9-10ft Hammerhead Shark and had a close shot with a big Roosterfish. It was a very action packed day. Our second day with Capt. Omar, we started out gathering big live baits and then ran out a ways to Omar’s favorite spots for BIG Roosters. While slow trolling live baits we took turns throwing a big popper and were rewarded with a nice Dorado right on the beachfront. It was about noon when we got the bite we were looking for and after a lengthy battle, Danniella landed a true Pez Gallo of a lifetime with a weight pushing the 100lb mark!!! After quick pictures, she was revived and safely released.

It goes without saying that we will be back. The beautiful landscape, friendly atmosphere and open access to world class fishing makes it a very complete package for the traveling angler like myself.”

Welcome back Thomas Anderson, Steve Overstain, Bill McPheeters and David Stanley. It was great to have you back fishing aboard the DUSTY BII, ECLIPSE91, THE REGINA, and the DOTTIE BII. They had lots of fun, catching dorado and wahoo and releasing marlin and rooster fish.

They said of their crew, “These guys are amazing, they work really hard, are very friendly, and are professionals. They also keep their boats clean and in great shape.”

Kenji Hori had a great week of fishing with us here at Hotel Buena Vista and decided to go out one more time before he left, this time aboard the REGINA. Same great results…. lots of nice catches near La Ribera banks while jigging. Thank you, Kenji, and congratulations!

Welcome Oscar Rosales and friends visiting from Todos Santos BCS Mexico. They spent their day fishing aboard the LILLIANA and ECLIPSE91 where Mr. Rosales and friends had a good time catching and releasing marlin and landing dorado which they enjoyed for dinner later that night, prepared especially for them by our talented kitchen staff.

Captain Jimmy Nelson and Luiza, from the “Fishing with Luiza” television show, fished with us, this time aboard the NATH & MICH with captain Felipe Valdez. Just north of Hotel Buena Vista outside of the Cerralvo Island they landed dorado while slow trolling with live bait.Congratulations you guys, and thanks for the fun times.
