Much closer calls happen all the time at the start of a sailboat race. Incredible games of "chicken" as the boats jockey for the best position and wind. Those guys were just practicing. The real thing involves from 10 to 50 boats doing the same thing from two different directions.

LMAO that's not even close to close, the starting line of the Transpac to Hawaii
or the Ensenada race is way crazier with 50-60 big boats inches apart...been
there and done this for years! LOL Raced in Transpac to Hawaii too! Real deal!
It gets wild but fun! Been in a couple side swipes too! HA!
Crossing tacks on different courses is way closer action...believe me!
That's yacht racing! I'll just stick to tuna fishin now......

that's a great shot. the boat in the video is a TP 52 where they have a Gran Prix class of them in the Med, their only a million and change, and like indy cars they are obsolete next year. the sails are ungodly expensive, jibs are in the 15K range, Mainsails near 30

out of my league

I can't imagine they can get closer. I was surprised those big boats can turn on a dime like that. Those captains have a lot of talent.

With the coming of maxi ocean racers made of glass, epoxy cold
molded cedar, then carbon fiber and space age materials,
getting lighter and lighter, the turning on a dime on these boats
is amazing. We not only raced many many days and hours but practiced
all this over and over and over...not a game for the meek. I can assure
Aggro when it comes to racing big boats, or drawing the short straw
or low # in the hat, to take a ride in the bosun's chair 90ft up the mast
at 2am to clear a tangled halyard, while surfing down 50ft swells in
the Molokai channel....not for cupcakes...!!! No mas for me!
PS Chicks love sailboats FYI.....LOL
