Went out on a private charter sponsored by Richards Fishing Tackle on the Aloha Spirit with Captain Shawn Steward. Plan was to hit the rock fish first, and if that works out we were to head to the beach in search of Seabass, Yellows and the other kelp species. The ride out kinda sucked, so I elected to stay inside.

Once we got to the islands the weather became amazing, not much wind and the sun came out. We got to the Rockfish spot and bam! We limited out in 40 minutes for 16 guys. Nice big reds! Headed to the beach and searched different spots, sheeps and some smaller whitefish were coming over the rail.

At one point I feel and something taking my line while fishing a lead head with a whole squid. Put it in gear and boom, line starts peeling off. I thought was feeling some good head shakes and Shawn says I think we have one. After the line stops, I start to gain and It doesn't feel the same anymore. Gets caught in the kelp for a bit, deckhand comes over to help and of course, a damn Bat Ray! Oh well, it did feel good though.

Overall a great day, we didn't get any Seabass or Yellows but I had a hell of a time with a great group.

I loaded up on some taco and ceviche meat, so it was all well worth it.

The boat and crew were absolutely amazing, I am going to end up chartering the boat in the future for sure.

    Thanks for reading,

    Mike

Whole squid on the leadhead...line starts peeling off....man oh man, you prolly knew you had a big ass WSB or slug YT on the other end until that Ray ruined everything.

I had a very similar experience in the LB harbor (Halibut City) several years ago. I caught a beast and just knew it was a 25lb Halibut. Took so long to get it to color that I had time to think about who I was gonna hook up with fillets. :D Then the damn Ray showed up and ruined my plans.

I know I was fortunate to have been able to have such a badass fight and a memoriable fishing experience, but I damn if I still dont feel disappointed when I think back. lol.

I certainly enjoyed the read and can relate to what this feels like. Thanks for the report... and for the reminder of my PB Halibut that never was!!

Congrats, I use to fish that charter every month it went out. Great guys to fish with. Good tackle shop also. I need to make some time to fish with them again.

Cory made a move a couple years ago to co-captain a 120' merchant marine military training vessel out of Port Hueneme.

This is some funny stuff! My friend Don has the dubious distinction of being the "Bat Ray King". He even had a custom airbrushed hat with this honorary title and pic of a ray.

He habitually turns 30 pound seabass, yellows and halibut into 80 pound bat rays like magic. Now even if I know he has the real thing hooked up, I tell him it's a ray. Endless entertainment! :D

    You are not alone!

    Thanks that's awesome.
I used to live next to him in Ventura as a kid. He taught me everything I know about fishing. He always told me he wanted to captain a big vessle. Im happy he pursued his dreams. Great guy, miss him all the time.

I miss fishing with him also. He used to come up to the bow and fire off a swimbait to try for a big ling when he could get a chance during a trip. He always was willing to teach you what he knew. Seems like everyone who works with Shawn has that attitude.
