Hey guys,

Jumped on the Aloha Spirit this morning. Pat was at the helm. Kelly and Cheyenne were on deck and Anna was in the galley. 18 peeps on this trip and Pat said we would be heading up the coast as the islands had been slow the last few days. We would be taking a 2 hr ride up the coast and doing some rock fishing. Weather was overcast with a slight breeze as we headed out. At 5:00. After about an hour, Pat throttled down the engine because we had run over a loose rope attached to a buoy and some fishing gear and got the prop wrapped. The crew got to it and with some cutting and reversing the motor we were able to resolve the issue and get back on our way. As we got to the spot, there was lots of life around. Several whales and huge schools of dolphin all around.

The first drops were slow in producing so we tried another deeper spot nearby. (550') All we got was a bunch of big salmon groupers and several huge cow cod. We took a 20 min20210412_083742.jpg drive further north and the the spots began to produce with lots of nice sized Bosco's coming along with the occasional red. We still were getting an occasional cow cod and even 3 lingcod came aboard. By this time the wind has picked up quite a bit and things were getting messy.

Pat made the call to run to the island and try some inshore spots so off we went. Conditions were much nicer there.

We found a good bite on the better sized whitefish which bit the cut squid and even the anchovies we had for bait. We limited out on whitefish and then hit one other spot for bass but it ended up being a quick hit on some legal sized barracuda before we called it a day.

Pat did a good job putting us on fish. Water is still a little cold at the island but things should be getting ready to pop there soon. Rockfish bit the SP jig well on the deep spots and even though there was a lot of current I was able to fish effectively with a short toss up wind. Used 250g long jig and 290g flutter jig. Cudas on 100g colt sniper and Whitefish on chovys or squid and a sliding sinker. Guys fishing dropper loops did as well or better.

Thanks for that, great boat and crew.
It's been so windy up here the water is all churned up. Once the wind backs off some it should settle into a good season. All the upwelling should be good for the food chain.

Nice report, fun to give everything a whirl some trips and nice to be on a boat that will afford you the chance if need be. Quick question, I thought I knew most of the rockfish nicknames but never learned what a bosco was. Pink rockfish or something? Thanks for rescuing me from my ignorance haha.

Good fishin'!
