The first post didn't come out like I wrote it...dunno why. Here it is, trying again.

Was tempted to go try for the big shibi Kaneohe side but had no idea if the channels would be closed out due to the big swells rolling in to make that 30 to 50 foot surf on the north shore. Didn’t want to haul the trailer to Heeia for nothing so went out of Keehi to go bottom instead.

Left at zero-dark-thirty for the Banks and since Capt. Fred Archer said can catch fish on the troll at night, and others on BD have tried it, plus had about a 3/4 moon, figured why not drag a lure on the way. Thinking that it would be easier for the fish to see a bigger lure, put out an Archer meatball bar with a big chasebait. Everybody else went moe-moe except me on the way across the Kaiwi Channel and I was busy watching so we no bang one whale li’dat, so as far as I knew nothing went hit.
<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Either that or the quiet Penn ratchet never sound-off enough, ‘cause after got home and was hanging up the chasebait to dry so the hook no rust out, noticed that the skirt got raked. Had scrapes like something went grabbum but somehow never stuck the hook. Close but no cigar, almost went catch something trolling in the dark. So all you bruddahs dragging lures in the dark – keep trying, fish do eat at night.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Oh, wasn’t a total loss, we got good eats from the bottom. No, wasn’t biting so good we could catchum with our eyes closed but my buddy went blink when the flash went off…or maybe really was too early for him.<o:p></o:p>

Hey Courtland,
Good going on your Onaga catch! That is a hefty one for sure......bigger than any bottomfish I ever caught! Even though it was slow you sure did okay, and definitely always better than not going fishing. I will try to go out on Thursday and hopefully fish Kaneohe but I'll let you know.

Way to go on the bottom fish catch, thats a fatty! Good to hear about the rubs on the lure you dragged at night. One of us is going to get a middle of the night sword or bigeye sooner or later

Hey Russ,

You better pick-up the So_Lo 5" heavy duty stainless steel gaff soon. A guy offered me $60 bucks for it but I told him I'm holding it for you. At $30 bucks it's a steal. It retails for $162 online. After cleaning off the crud off the handle it looks bearly used. Give me a call when you're coming. Ken

An egotistical stuffed-shirt like you should know that no one speaks an on-line post but rather that such postings are written. Or is your command of the English language something that exists only in your own mind? Because we are from Hawaii and choose to communicate in the local vernacular does not mean we are stupid; to assume that to be the case, as you did, is stupid. You ought to turn your purported grammar skills loose on your own job title. What is an “economic development manager”? Is that someone who manages an economical development, like a cheap housing area, meaning you’re a slum lord? With your attitude of superiority surely you would not deign to visit a backwater such as Hawaii but if you ever do entertain the thought, keep in mind the sage advice of Dakine Malihini…don’t.

You gentlemen (I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt) are obviously sorely unaware of the kinds of fish we have and fishing we do here in Hawaii. The fish pictured is an Etelis coruscans (you may Google it to learn more). It is the most prized of Hawaiian deep water snappers but yes, it is a ‘gold’ fish of sorts – the single fish pictured would’ve easily been worth $200 to $300 had we chosen to sell it, but we value family and friends more, so we ate it.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>

We here in the good ol’ USA have freedom of speech, thanks to our fathers, grandfathers, and today’s warriors like Mike and Scott and others here on BD, but maybe the above quoted California folks should remember Abraham Lincoln’s saying: “’Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.”<o:p></o:p>

shadddap u jackass...lol. Did you understand that one? hahaLOL If not. Its okay to be ignorant and belittle others to gain the satisfaction of being superior to all others... even your wife... if you even have one..haha. Just remember.. its a high fall off that pedestal you so proudly sit upon.

Other than that... that is a great looking Onaga. I wish I could get a couple of those before New years. They are a hot commodity going for 6 or more bucks a pound at that time. Freeze it and save it. Steamed Onaga with mayonnaise, onions, shrimp, crab meat and some herbs and spices...mmmmm so Ono... errr I mean Very Delicious... for those who don't understand pidgin/Hawaiian/english.

Ain't knocking my Hawaiian bros, no way!

Night fishin'? Oh yea! Here's a nice ono caught on a black bar by none other than our own Cappy Chris Jones. Put 'em out...they will come!
