It’s pretty early to start getting my hopes up, I know….But, there are Albacore being taken right now east of the 121 around the 28. So that means those fish are south east of Morro Bay in 60-62 degree water. The hot water blob at the equator has warmed considerably over the last few weeks, and has pushed hot water up against Central America and mainland Mexico. As the summer warming trend happens, that water and those fish have no where to go but north. And the currents finally look favorable for the central coast after 15+ years of no show albacore. I bet they slam the longfins in the Santa Barbara channel this summer. And I’m just going to go out on a limb here and predict we see some of the same crazy shit we saw outta Northern California last year, with Allison yellowfin, Bigeye, Dorado, and Blue fin may all converge in central California this summer. Get your albacore gear ready, because it’s finally going to be needed again 🎣😜

Do you mean Southwest?
No, southeast . Commercial boats catching at the 120 and 28 . That’s about 450 miles south and just a little east of Morro bay. The 120 line basically splits down the middle of the Channel Islands, so, due south of the CI’s at the 28 line where the temp break is, is holding albacore right now.

If you go to Haworth fishing on Facebook, he talks about where they were catching the Albies they were selling on the dock. Last week he said 540 miles S-SW of San Diego. And he posted again yesterday saying 550 miles.

    🤔 550 NM for 14# albacore ... or 60 miles for 100# BFT .....

I wish the albacore would come back bieber
There’s fish inside of 550nm along the same break the couple of boats out of San Diego have been catching at. They are not albacore boats. Those boats go that way because they are targeting multiple species that are typically more abundant towards Hawaiian waters. Albacore don’t care about where a couple commercial boats like to go. They follow the temperate waters and breaks with food that they like. If they continue to move east like they are, they have no place to go but north up the coast once they’re off Ensenada. There’s very little pressure on these southern fish as much of the once thriving commercial albacore fleets from the USA and Mexico are gone along with the canneries that once thrived. The eastern pacific commercial albacore fishery only exists from Oregon to Canada now. But, there have been periods, like 1926-1941 when the water temps warmed considerably and the albacore disappeared for 15 or more years, but then returned in numbers with the cooler waters that followed. Let’s wait and see what happens, but my money is on them showing up to so cal and Morro bay 🤙
