It always seemed like when scattered, school size, BFT would mix with the Albacore it made the Albacore finicky. Occasionally in those years, the boat lines, typically 300# parachute cord, would get blown up. Probably huge BFT or Big Eye. But, believe they weren't targeted and today's modern tackle was not yet available.

I metered them off Newport a few days ago. Halfway in the water column. So thick it looked like the bottom.

Saw lots of them floating up of Carpenteria above Ventura when trying for salmon a couple weeks ago. Some nice clean 60 deg water pushing in offshore of the Northern Channel Is., got me dreaming of albacore.

Catching school size bft on the slide from a albacore jig strike, with bass gear :D

I think this also. Seems when school size bft are mixed with albacore the albacore are more cautious. Then if it was straight albacore. The albacore pick up some of the bft shy behavior a tad. It seems

Slug Albies and School-Super size BFT would be a rad season. Replace small yft and dorados with slug albacore. Would be a nice cycle

Slugos are killer to fish. Departing from SD fishing Mex got a 43.2lb Albie the year below, on bait. I think 2004

The big humboldt squid cycled through durring the last good albie runs.

    Whatever that means

    They do like chove

The ocean covers 70% of the earths surface. Doesn't take much for migratory fish to shift hundreds of miles.

'04 was a good year for close and BIG albies. Me and a buddy got them (limit of 15lb fish with one 30lb mixed in) in early June at the 43 and a week or so later they were wide open at the 302 and were all bigger fish.
They are welcome to make a return.....as for bluefin, I've seen lots of mixed albie/bluefin bites.

I do associate them with some good Albacore years. I remember on too many trips when we got in a zone and started seeing them with that purplish water, it was time to get busy.

Some old timers say Albacore follows when these have been seen. All I know, two years ago, they were everywhere. And the YFT fishing was off the wall, and the water was WAY to warm for the longfins.....

I love when a socal boat picks one off on the troll the last couple of years and everyone starts freakin out on the internet.

If my math is about right the last albacore bite was about 13 or so years ago

Yah 13-14 years ago. Jumbos 2003-2004. I think we had 2 seasons of jumbo albies

A few years before were more peanut size albies

The years before peanut albies it was exotics

    Here is a odd ball.

2008 mid September. Coming back from Lupe aboard the shogun on a 6 dayer. We had 3 great days of yft fishing at Lupe. Heading back to SD we were looking for 2 marked kelps. The Gun found both of the kelps for the fleet. Small yft, dorado, mid grade yellows, and skipjack tuna. I was skip jigging for yft but the skipjack would not leave me alone.

So I sunk out a heavy Sumo JR blue chrome single hook for a yft (only sumo jig I ever liked). And this 33lb Albie ate it. But I first got bit by a small yft on the yoyo grind down deep and the yft came off and this Albie jumped on.

Really cool 2008. It really happened. I came back from Costa Rica for the trip and I don't think many were caught in 2008? I wasn't following the fishery much in 08

I miss fishing albacore. I hope they show but it seems the water might be a little warm already.

April 17th 2005. Jason got word of early season new arrival albies, shredded travel tails. We took boat MS.Kellie out with Nelz. Found some small grade albies off a jig strike and yellows off a kelp. April 2005 this was considered a great first early season trip. Albies are in the zip lock. Now its limits of bft spoiled!

April 17th 2005. Small albies. The larger grade moved in 2.5 months later. I think or the big ones were 03-04.
