Can I use Royal Polaris or John Collins knot to tie my 130 lbs braids to 130 lbs or 100 lbs mono top shop? If yes, how many wraps should I use? John Collins said 5 wraps. Is it enough?

I’ve used a standard Albright and it was fine. I used 20 wraps. It ends up smoother than the Alberto/modified Albright/RP.

I usually insert the fluoro into the braid and use sato crimps and glue!

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. With heavier lines, I'd stick with FG and PR bobbin knots, or go with the bimini/albright. Better yet, if you don't want to tie those knots, ditch the long topshot and tie your braid to a swivel and shorten the leader to 3 feet.
if you are going braid to a short leader make it 4’ and ditch the swivel…

Albright has worked pretty well with soft mono such as Jinkai up to maybe #130 at most. Didn’t work as well with other stiff mono lines. Couldn’t cinch the knot tight enough to make the loop in the mono close completely.

I usually like about 6 wraps for the Albright but might have tied it with only 5 wraps sometimes. Try tying the knot a few times and see what works the best with your lines. Important thing is to cinch the knot smoothly and get a snug and good looking knot that does not slip.

Yes you can tie the RP knot for 130#. A 5-turn works well, just pay extra attention when you cinch it as the larger diameters tend to not ”sit” well. As others have mentioned, there are other lower profile knots, or better yet in-line place to hollow braid, but the RP will be more than adequate.

For something like that I tie a Bimini twist in the solid braid to make a loop and buy a windon leader to do a nice loop to loop connection

If you are confident with the RP and not the others, it will work just fine. The others may provide you with a slightly lower profile but you can certainly tie an RP with 130 pound test

You don’t even need a Bimini twist. Figure 8 loop holds 100% of its strength and you can do a loop to loop.

Or, if it’s hollow, you can make a seamless loop or stick the line in the braid and serve it or glue it.

We’ve had multiple fish 225-285 caught on a 50 yard topshot of 135 izor straight tied to 130 spectra either with an rp or bob sands knot. If you’re confident in your ability to properly cinch your connection cleanly with heavy line, then my vote is fish it.

I found 6 wraps on the rp knot snugs up pretty well, 7 wraps was difficult. It’s almost impossibly to pull hard enough to break any clean connection at that line class.

Thanks everybody for the advices. I have 130 lbs solid braids Power Pro Depth Hunter and 135 lbs or 100 lbs mono Izorline. I will practice tying it with 6 wraps RP knot for braids to mono connection. I try to follow Steve Carson's advice to put 25 ft of mono top shot to braids for reason of shock absorning. To connect mono to 200 lbs leader of mono or flurocarbon for attaching knife jig, I plan to use 5-wraps single San Diego Jam knot. Is 5-wraps single San Diego Jam knot enough or should I use double San Diego Jam knot for extra security?

A single San Diego is plenty. The long range guys will fish a few different knots like the springer or double trilene, but a single San Diego is still incredibly strong. A double San Diego for that line diameter gets pretty bulky and difficult to cinch perfectly.

Thanks very much for your reply! I will go for single San Diego Jam knot. The biggest issue for beginner like me is the fear of not having the right connection and set up and lose the rare opportunity to catch a big fish. Never caught a bluefin tuna before.

    What's a Double Trilene Knot?

Looks more like a Erwin Knot:

I believe the consensus is that they’re basically the same not, though the Erwin knot may have one additional step, but same reverse wrapping style.

Bob sands knot holds just fine even tying 200/200 or larger. All about cinching it before trimming the tags.
    Completely agree.

Also, don’t be afraid to leave a pretty healthy tag end on the braid. I can’t say a half inch of braid hanging off my knot ever gave me an issue, and gives some hypothetical peace of mind.

After taking a second look at the video, it appears to be a simple Trilene Knot, just tied differently. And the "snap" is required in order to get the loops around the guys finger to pass under the coils around the loops.

Why do they keep trying to rename existing knots for boats and crew members?
