ADVANCED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ACCURATE ATD 30
With summer on its swing to full throttle, I wanted to ask this question before it gets lost in the wave of reports about how great this summer’s fishing will be (fingers crossed).
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>
I bought an Accurate ATD this past January and took it on my first 15 day. I wanted to catch a cow on it, but didn&#8217;t get one on that reel (I got cows on rentals and my friend&#8217;s Avet 30). After catching these cows (and a 180lb on the ATD), I really feel that I should bump up to 130lb flouro, vice the 100lb flouro I originally intended to use on the ATD. <o:p></o:p>

The problem is: I had my ATD spooled with 100lb Jerry Brown solid spectra (a fine line by the way). So my question, can you effectively fish 130lb Flouro on 100 spectra with the full max drag off an ATD 30? (When I was fighting my 180lber, I was on its 2nd to last setting on the drag, and was still getting whooped. Tough fish!). I am worried that if I max the drag on my 130lb flouro, that the 100 solid spectra might break. Also, I am unsure if the ATD 30 has enough drag poundage to fish 130lb flouro. Does any one know the max drag on ATD 30?
<o:p></o:p>
I also posted this on the accurate forum to hit both places, the more answers the better. And (as always) I appreciate the help and opinions!<o:p></o:p>

the reel will fish 130# with no problems........the 100# spectra will fish your 130# leader with zero problems.....if you want you can splice in some 130# hollow spectra to make it easier to insert your 130# mono/FC into the spectra.

you will probably be fishing about 25# to 35# at strike and maybe 35# to 42# at full.......IMO you can fish it as is with no problems.....I have 5 ATDs and they are cow killers. max drag is probably in the area of #60.

Hello Dave,

I've fished an ATD 30 with 100 lbs spectra looped to a 130 lbs fluorocarbon leader. No problems landing big fish. I used 33 lbs at strike and 40+ lbs for the end game. No issues or problems landing the fish. The reel I was using had 45+ lbs of max drag with a full spool. Send it to Cals if you need your reel set up for more drag.

Since 100 lbs spectra breaks much higher than 100 lbs, you should be okay. You do have more abrasion resistance with 130 lbs spectra, so you could step up the spectra on the reel if you are concerned. Use 600 yards of 100 lbs spliced to 50 yards of 130 lbs. It should fit on an ATD 30 easily.

650 yards should get it down. If not, use a 50 series reel. The Tiburon 50 has the best freespool for a 50 series reel. It is even better than the Makaira tweaked by the factory...

Have fun on your trip this year!

Your ATD30 will be fine with a 130 topshot. The extra test on the fluoro is about abrasion against the hull, and fluoro is very abrasion resistant (except when the propeller is involved).

Considerations:
-a mack pulling 130 thru the water doesn't notice it, but a sardine MAY be effected and not look natural. It certainly will tire out faster.
-130 seaguar premier is the diam of everyone else's 100
-During daylight thinner line get bit waayyyy better
-You will not break 100# JB with drag settings on a reel, you can with your truck, but not a rod and reel
-Max drag on an ATD30? Are you planning on going overboard? I once reset mine for over 50 at full, tied off to a tree and pulled hard in the harness. Went back inside with the comment "that was #*#*#*ng nuts"

We can always do some drag testing and adjustments on the 4 days travel next January. It's funny how many guys will tell you they're set up with some gonzo drag setting only to find out that the scale is actually reading half of what they thought.

(I fish my 30's with 100, the 50's 130 and the 50W 200. I wonder if Art still has that 80 for sale?)

ps. Did you get a spot??

I am considering an ATD 30 but am concerned about capacity. How much 100# JB hollow will an ATD 30 hold, including 25 foot FC wind-on? I know Jeff is suggesting 600 yards but that's not what the reel specs say?

You should be able to get 700-750 yards of 100 lbs JB hollow spectra on an ATD 30 with room for a short top shot. Depends on wrap tension. After you catch a fish, it will compact even more allowing additional spectra line or just extra room for the top shot.

I fit 800 yds of 100 lbs hollow spectra on my Penn 30S (Tiburon topless frame)!

Good luck!

Right now it sounds like your on N or O on the preset.
You can adjust the preset drag lever so that your back in the mid-range of letters and get more drag.
Check this out.

I have 1 with straight 130# to 130# Fluoro and another ATD30 that has 600 yards of 100#, 50 yards of 130# spliced into that and 15 feet of fluoro spliced in.

This gives a little more line capacity as well as strength for when the fish is straight up and down and you wanna pull harder or put the rod on the rail.

Thanks for the reponses Guys! Especially ScreamingReel, SactoTuna and The Right Kind, that video is killer!

I might bump it up a knotch, I got a thread answer from Matt at Accurate about bumping up the drag, I might try to add 10 pounds on top of what I got. But its good to know that I wont break the 100lb Spectra, and there is already a 50 yard splice of 130lb spectra on top of that, so 130 pound, here I come!

@ Sactotuna: I just talked to Tracy today, she got the deposit, so Im committed! I wont start the count down until this fall though, I still feel pretty high from last trip. Looking forward to the fishing!

Get Some!
Dave
