This info is correct. The first-gen reels take the hex-shaped AR bearing and we no longer carry that one.
Soooo
What does an owner of these reels do when the AR bearing needs replacing?
I guarantee that my solution wouldn't be to buy a new Accurate if I was left in the lurch like that after paying a kings ransom for a reel.

There has to be an option so you can continue to use your reel.....another bearing manufacturer?....

Why would you discontinue carrying bearings for a reel you manufactured?Especially a very popular high-end one.If someone sends one in for service and it needs bearings what happens?Doesnt make sense.

Maybe Tibubon will make a side plate with a new bearing. Shamino did a trade in on Beastmasters for a newer reel maybe Accurate can do the same would be nice.

Well, Shimano still manages to sell reels and they tend to drop support for older reels.

the only real fix is to upgrade the gear side of the reel. that means replacing everything but the spool and frame. at that point might as well make it a 2speed. or dump it on ebay and someone else deal with all the BS.

Matt :

Is this true to all original 197, 270, 870 and 665 without SN#s ?
All of my reels have SN#s on the side/frame plate . I remember I did
replace one a year ago and I had to press it in. I do not remember the AR
bearing on my 197 being octogonal.

Just thought I would be clear on the SR# info

i had one of those side plates with a german hex AR bearing that failed. the inside diameter of that AR bearing was the same as a shimano bearing but the outside diameter was too big, so i got out a dremmel and ground away at the side plate until it fit and then slapped it back together again. and it worked!!!! but because it was a single AR bearing, i told the customer to limit the drag to 12 pounds. never heard back from the guy.

I only have two accurates neither new. I'm curious...at what age does an accurate reel become obsolete based on the last date of manufacture on the non-supported reels and ones which it sounds like have no real work around? Sorry Alan, my dremmel skills aren't what they used to be and I know longer live close enough to you to simply drop them off. In all seriousness, I know if taken care of bearing failure should not be an everyday occurance but, these are very expensive reels and with a dated lifespan for keeping a reel in tip top performance (part of which would be replacing a chunkchange bearing) could have folks looking in another direction.
