Well, I guess since Picasso pulled me into this by name I should say a little something.
My name is Mark referred to in Joe’s post as young Mark (which with my 50th right around the corner is a compliment I guess).

I too enjoy the written word and can tell you firsthand that in the literary world what this garbled bunch of sentence fragments compiled by someone who can’t quite filter the truth through their hazed perception is called is an unreliable narrator.
It does make for a spirited read, but is so skewed and presents so few actual details, that although it makes for a fun read it is a horribly biased account that doesn’t quite follow fact.
But, since that omniscient egret that did nothing but sit around the bait tank taking up space, heckling other passengers and then decided to fly off leaving this pile of crap behind it on the forum I just thought I’d clean up a little bit behind that bird.

First let’s talk about elbows. He’s the guy that helped the crew offload the trip that came in before us for a seamless turn around while the egret and green pee smoked weed and drank at the back of the line. Then elbows went to break down all the cardboard destined for recycling.
Then Picasso, he helped lug gear onto the boat for everyone even your crap you weren’t there to load.
Guess what else, those crab legs you said were a little much for you were provided by him for the entire group. What a dick.

Your Karma post is about the stupidest thing I’ve ever read regarding someone getting hurt. But since you were at the stern drinking I will fill you in on exactly what happened. A not too mobile angler (notice I didn’t say who) was hung in the anchor line with a thrashing marlin on the business end. Elbows jumped on the pulpit and unwrapped him and handed his rod back. As he got down he hit his leg and was badly bruised. I’m glad you think he had it coming.
The fact that you and green pee seemed to be above the law using illicit drugs at the tackle rack as you saw fit was blatant disregard for the rest of the passengers on the trip, much less disrespectful to the captain and crew. Great mentoring.
And no, green pee did not Learn how to fish, but had his fish hooked and handed to him by Andy over and over-so let’s not get your feathers all fluffed up like you were some great mentor. He learned nothing from you but how to act like a douche on a boat.

In closing I will add that the only person who has ever ruined a long range trip for me is that goofy little man in the chipmunk suit that was all hopped up on sugar and caffeine bouncing off the rails calling me Brother. Sickening.
And no, it wasn’t the one where he chopped up his intrepid jacket into little pieces on the stateroom floor like a spoiled 5 year old.

And by the way Picasso we are talking about the bird with the 5/0 super mutu sticking out of its head right?
This is getting better than the Kardashian’s.
Sometimes the most exciting thing that happens on a trip, is the passengers getting into it. I was on a trip (a boat we all know well, not the RP) there was a passenger on that was way out of control, when the captain tried to lightly “restrain” him, they both ended up in a wrestling match and both went overboard. We were anchored up at the ridge. Sadly phone’s didn’t have video recording at that time.

Right on Mark. Can you imagine if this weird, douche bag actually called Elbow’s son (not used to that name) a POS to his face? That’s when I knew it was made up bullshit drama. I hope you guys got to pull on some Savage Custom Rods during the trip! Hopefully we will share some new adventures soon.

Exactly, I do not think it is beneficial or necessary to name a specific boat or person. Now if you are in a private conversation, that is a little different. Every trip seems to have the AH, the drunk and dude who tangles everyone because he is not watching his game. Sometimes if you are lucky, you will also get the dude who combat fishes like the only trips he has been on is the 1/2 day boats.
Over the 35 years of fishing I have gotten into it with anglers being my fault, they have gotten it into with me being their fault.
We just all need to offer each other grace, usually that person or you are dealing with a horrible situation onshore and just want to go fishing to hopefully forget about it.
Everyone has had some very difficult times the last few years, with all the BS going on.
The boat owners are working hard to keep it together, inflation, fisheries closing, some passengers upset, etc.

Not saying I support the deck hand’s behavior. But we need to be honest with ourselves about when we pick and choose to accept killing. Think about how many fish you’ve killed needlessly in your life for pure entertainment. One may say “well I catch and release” to which I ask “how many tuna fish have you caught with a hook already in its mouth”?

Or, if you fish mono (instead of wire) for wahoo, same can be said. You’re prioritizing your entertainment (getting bit) over the preservation of life (by using a wire leader you reduce the chance that the fish cuts the line and then goes to die). Same thing if you fish light tackle - any pelagic fish you break off has a 99.9% chance of death.

Again, not trying to justify anything. Or say two wrongs make a right. Just pointing out that we all murder needlessly. Just depends on whose perspective you’re using.

Don’t let anyone live rent free in your head. hope you can look back on your trip with fond memories otherwise.
Killing for food and for pleasure is LEGAL killing a hungry bird is not , Lots of sport fisherman choose to release fish and only keep what they want to eat , I fucken guarantee the ass hole who smashed the birde brains out had no intention of eating the bird , what a fucken moron

I guess your name is Joe. I don’t know you, but my name is Jeff savage. I personally know the person you call “Elbows” and his son you refer to as “DH.” I’m not here to debate whether or not a bird was killed, or how. I am a father; I don’t know if you are. Regardless, you publicly are trying to defame someone I know, who has helped me become a better fisherman, and you called his son a piece of shit. That is completely unacceptable. No matter what happened, you are recounting your experience in a way that is slanderous, and cowardly. I know for a fact you never said that about his son to his face, and if I ever see you in person I will ask you why. I hope you have a good answer.
How does Slander fit in this situation ? The guy recapped what he saw and that's it , your spin on the situation doesn't hold water, we're you their ? I didn't think so , what the POS did was kill a bird which is against the LAW ,if I was on the boat and I saw this happen the POS would have been tossed in the water , no excuse whatsoever to kill a bird on purpose, nice try

I talked to three of the passengers during, and after the trip. You weren’t there (not their) either, and I assume you didn’t talk to anyone who was on the trip. If you did, please let me know. My understanding comes from people I have known, and fished with, for years. Additionally, they were there. Now you are calling someone a POS that you have probably never met. I have known him since he was a kid. I wasn’t trying to put a “spin” on anything. I talked to the people who were there, and involved, before I said anything.

    This thread DELIVERS!

I‘m not real impressed with any of the original characters in this Aesop’s Fable.
I definitely am not surprised to hear that alcohol or drugs may have been involved in the drama.

What is the lesson to be learned here?

Is there an intelligent kind way to teach the principle of why we shouldn’t be cruel to birds, fish or people?
Or do we have to be cruel to the person to teach them not to be cruel?
If so what does that say about us?

A baby cry’s because it is incapable of properly expressing what it wants or needs, while many adults are still struggling with how to handle emotions and situations appropriately.

When the seafaring moral compass is broken, it is wise to turn to the Master Teacher for true North and his Principles Of Happiness.

Personally, I have never got into it with anyone on a LR boat. I will just keep my distance. Let them tangle others sorry 😂 keep them 3 or more people away. Time my drop in to who will be on each side of me

Wind the bird in trying not to harm it. Head on the rail pinned. Remove hook. Or cut the hook off before smashing the birds head in

Moral of the story. Don't kill seabirds unless it's a necassary evil. Pisses people off

I grew up on SD 1/2 day to 3/4 day. Down the road from me

Belly hook when the birds are eating the hooked baits

Look for birds before you cast or underhand lob is best and even better. Deploy straight down while holding the bait until it's facing away from the boat. Then let it go

Learned that at Clipperton after Frank was not happy. I got bird bit twice in a row with Caballito. Within a few minutes. Got my baits back but wounded. When he already told me how not to get bird bit and I didn't listen perfectly

Don't want the birds to see the bait deployed.

Every trip has a story good and bad. Which one you focus on is your choice as the bad can be avoided if you put effort in doing so. As men get older we become more bitter and we drift into that mode easily which allows one to scream out at dinner as other men that are loudly enjoying themselves

Did the deckhand see the survivor chances for gull bleak and put it out of suffering?

Every trip is different in catch and anglers and there is good in every trip if you choose to seek

so did all you guys tip 50% ?

I would like to say this:
LR fishing is a very small niche group.

for many here it is a passion.. for some it is an experiment -moving up from shorter trips ..for others it is a vacation..for some it is a "once in lifetime- check the box" type deal..

all humans are flawed , no one is perfect..
we all have ups / downs and life challenges of some kind--no matter how good that person's life mayappear to the other people.
    we are all different ..
I have met many people on trips. some I have stayed in contact with and call them friends...and with most others -we got along as we shared a fishing adventure that most do not get to do.
then there are the few "that guys"(even might have been me once or twice..)...who for better or worse , make trips "interesting" or a problem (if you let them)

I have also met many here on this LR board over the years. Learned a ton and enjoyed the reports and stories which often can bring a keyboard warrior to feel like they were there..
...and I even call some of them friends -even though I have never actually met or fished with them .
and even though I have never actually met them, I feel like I know them well:
I know what boats they love to fish..tackle they use, what way they like to fish and what species for...
and for many -their personal life stories and political views -solely derived just from their posts and online conversation.

sometimes the popcorn threads are the most entertaining on here.. I have been involved in a few.

    we are all unique.
Remember the good stuff. forgive the bad stuff..
put the focus where it should be.. the sharing of a rare adventure.
    Gratitude...

    I appreciate all of you.

now ..which LR boat is your favorite and why?

I would like to say this:
LR fishing is a very small niche group.

for many here it is a passion.. for some it is an experiment -moving up from shorter trips ..for others it is a vacation..for some it is a "once in lifetime- check the box" type deal..

all humans are flawed , no one is perfect..
we all have ups / downs and life challenges of some kind--no matter how good that person's life appears to the other people.
    we are all different though..
I have met many people on trips. some I have stayed in contact with and call them friends...and most others we got along as we shared a fishing adventure that most do not get to do. then there are the few that guys(even might have been me once or twice..)...who for better or worse , make trips "interesting" or a problem (if you let them)

I have also met many here on this LR board over the years. Learned a ton and enjoyed the reports and stories which often can bring a keyboard warrior to a feeling like they were there..
...and some even call them friends even though I have never actually met or fished with them .
    Many have distinct personalities..
and even though I have never actually met them:
I know what boats they love to fish..what way they like to fish and what for...and for many -their personal ,life stories and political views -solely derived just from their posts.

sometimes the popcorn threads are the most entertaining on here.. I have been involved in a few.

we are all unique. Remember the good stuff. forgive the bad stuff..put the focus where it should be.. the sharing of a rare adventure.
    Gratitude...

    I appreciate all of you.

now ..which LR boat is your favorite and why?
    Amen!
