A Tampa never to be seen again
The modern day history of Tampa, Florida, can be traced to the founding of Fort Brook at the mouth of the Hillsborough River (today's downtown Tampa) in 1824.
The town of Tampa was incorporated in 1855.
I was born in Tampa December 8, 1941, and have lived in the Cigar City ever since.
Ever wonder why Tampa is known as the Cigar City?
More than 200 cigar factories have risen across the region employing tens of thousands of people and turning what had been a tiny town in 1884 into a major metropolis by the turn of the 20 th Century. At its peak the Tampa cigar industry produced more than 500 million cigars a year. One of the biggest, best, carried the Tampa name...
HAVATAMPA
My Mother worked at HAVATAMPA for over twenty years.
In the Tampa I grew up in this was a common sight:
Talk about a teeth-shuddering ride.
I know!
Gandy Bride was a 'little' different way back when:
When I was growing up B52's were stationed at MacDill:
Once you have see a 52 fly over tree top level you will never forget it.
This disaster could, should, be forgotten:
This will never be forgotten. Every Tuesday night matches at the Armory were standing room only:
Both Graham & Malenko are doing their wrestling in Heaven now.
No all Tampa history is bright. Hopefully we will learn from our mistakes:
On a cold windy day:
Still another mistake of the past:
No mistakes here
These places were wonderful:
Not so wonderful:
Want to see a great movie and stay in your car?
Now this is more like it:
Drive-ins were scattered all over Tampa."
I saw Captain Nemo at the Tower for 50 cents:
"Were" They are no more drive-ins in or near Tampa.
SAD!
Like to eat
Been a long time since I have seen McDonald's welcome University of Tampa students:
I know; I am a proud graduate of the University of Tampa:
Fantastic Florida foods of the past:
Absolutely fantastic food:
Even the building is no more.
You may still be able to purchase deviled crabs:
But loaded with real Blue Crab Meat is next to impossible.
Like the very best Stone Crabs?
None better!
"The Colonnade, a seafood restaurant on Bayshore Boulevard, posted a note on the door Wednesday, informing customers the building and property had been sold. This follows the successful purchase of the property with plans to redevelop the waterfront site. The purchase of the property was a joint venture between Ascentia Development Group and Batson-Cook Development Company.
Tuesday night, April 6th, was the restaurant’s last night of business."
Crabbing will never be the same
Finally, a 'TRADEMARK' Grocery/restaurant that is still open.
What customers are saying:
"Been here 5+ times
Their Cuban Sandwiches are absolutely to die for. Been coming to the same place since I was 10 years old."
My daughter, Barbara, brings Dad his favorite Cuban:
