Left SD bay at 1130am with a half scoop of medium strength sardines and caught about 40 mackerel at the barge. Headed out to the 9 mile bank with plans of trying to find a kelp paddy. Weather was a little bumpy but not bad, no white caps out there. Trolled feathers while heading up north on the 9. Around 230pm saw the fleet on the horizon with about 15 private boats. Trolled over to the spot and saw the 20’x15’ kelp paddy. Pulled upswell and started to drift, everybody was being friendly and sharing the kelp. Dorado foamers would pop up every few minutes. Landed 3 lost about 4 to pulled hooks. Live mackerels and sardines was what worked for us on 20-30lb flouro. Saw other boats running and Gunning and hooking up on the lures. First dorado of my career and looking forward to a good meal of mahi-mahi. Good luck out there, be safe and catch some fish!

I was right with you. Couldn’t believe the number of fish around me all day. I also couldn’t get them to go. Lost 1 that was it. Most frustrating day I have had in a long time.

    Thanks nice report.

What method did you use to make the bait at the barge? I seem to have trouble making bait at MB barge and jetty so always trying to improve that skill.

It took about 45 minutes until we had the first bite and it came off, plenty of fish out there and just getting them to bite is the hard part. Good luck out there on your upcoming trips. I used 4/0 bronze live bait hooks nose hooked to the live mackerel to 20lb flouro that’s what got it to bite. I’m sure I could have got more bites with 15lb line but that’s cutting it close. And sardines on the 1/0 hook 20lb/30lb line.

Go to squidco and get the 40lb sabiki rigs with the bigger hooks about $2 a piece, and use a 1-3oz weight depending on current. Cut up fresh or frozen sardines/anchovies if you have some saved up in the freezer 3rd option would be squid or mackerel. Fill hooks up with the small cut bait drop down 15-20 feet from surface. Wide open on the Mack’s. SD bait barge.

We were out there the day after. What worked best for us was to stay on top of the boiling fish and away from other boats fighting for the paddy with a diver in it lol(open water dodos under birds) We basically had to put the bait in their face. We used sardines and ours were half rolled but still worked. Also I snagged one in a boil on I think an 80g colt sniper. As a lot of us know these fish are plugged with micro pinheads so gotta get creative. Good luck…

Thanks for the good information, I will stock up on some lightweight colt snipers for the next trip. 🤙🏼
