Lol i went on a 1/2 day out of 22nd a while back on the monte carlo, and there were tons of first timers on the boat, the deckhand stands up and his first words were, “if you get tangled up, im not f’ing getting you untangled, pay attention and only call me if you need a gaff!” I knew it was all downhill from there! Ive been on the 1/2 day outta daveys total different experience some miles down the road. Needless to say i moved back down to diego and havnt had a negative trip yet, be it 1/2 or 1 1/2 day trips. Def different vibe up there in LA when it comes to customer service, they act like they pay you to be on their boat and you should be ever so grateful!

Thanks for the comprehensive report! You reminded me of why I bought my own boat and spend all the time and money owning, maintaining and operating it and my tow vehicle. Freedom in many ways👍🏻

Sorry you had to deal with the bullshit hope your nexts trips are better!

This thread is full of fun.

Just went down to the nearby chain tackle shop to get a reel spooled. The old man asked where I was headed and what boat. I said Full day Catalina on The Pursuit. He made a face as if he just sniffed week old stinky underwear. And waved his hand like he was tryin to get the smell away. Lol.

Why the hate?! Lol. El Nino put me on The Pursuit in 2015 and its been good ever since. And I know they still have many loyal customers. Tried many cattle boats to Catalina over the years and still its my favorite. All I ask is we catch fish and they make me a burger. Thats it. I tip all I can. That includes jackpot. Thats just me.

My other option is to buy my own boat. Because we all know its fishing utopia. Eveyone becomes polite on the water and you never run into dicks. Yea right.

I think most of us have experienced good and bad trips. I remember a trip on the SportKing, when it was up here years ago. The young AH deck hands refused to release the fish to all of us unless we tipped extra. This was after we had landed. That didn’t go over well for them. As I became a little bit wiser and more experienced I planned for the longer Range trips and those tend to have the better captains and crew There is lot more money involved and the crew, I think, recognize this. The experience was always much more rewarding.

Fishing the local boats, I only go during the week days, particularly, Mondays, I don’t join the jackpot , I fish away from the crowd, and my only objective is to have a good time on the water.
it works all the time

I stopped entering the jackpot because I got tired of winning it all the time. You fuckers on those cattle boats can't fish!!! 😆

Seriously though, when I do win JP, which is every time, it goes to my galley tab, fillet bill, and the rest is a crew tip.
My 12 year old been out 3 times, won it twice. He was so triggered when he came home with no cash. 🤣

I’ve been on the Victory twice in the month, great boat and crew! I grew up fishing daveys in Newport but they’ve been kind of douchey the last couple times, so I decided to try something new.

Wanting a bigger boat
Went out on the Pursuit out of 22nd street on 9/5 for a full day trip. Good fishing, but overall a pretty shitty experience, wanted to share so others dont get sucked into the same BS. Trip started and went great the whole day up until the end. Captain was a super fishy young guy, we had what must have been a 15 year old deck hand, and one other more seasoned deckhand, decent cook and clean boat. Bait was already on board so we headed straight to the back side of catalina. My buddy signed up for jackpot and I skipped. We get to the back side of the island and we start fishing live bait and caught 2 really nice yellows, 20 and 25 lb. The larger one my buddy landed, during his fight the captain told my buddy to let him have his rod so my friend passes it over and the captain proceeds to fight it for a minute or 2 trying to get it out of the kelp and passed it back, took another lap and crossed another guys line, deckhand asked for pass back and they got it untangled and my buddy landed it shortly thereafter. Shortly after, my dad hooks a sealion, I grab his rod and kill the 30 yards of braid its taken ASAP with my dykes and I get a smart remark from the deckhand asking why I did that, and I should have buttoned down my drag to get all my line back. the tone was hilarious, homeboy was pretty miffed for some reason? I look at him and he apologizes with "great reaction though". Didnt see a reason to put the wear on the drag to try to break the mono so oh well, lesson learned? On top of the keeper fish, everyone went wide open on bonito early in the day, we dont care for them but kept a handful to feed to our dogs, Right before we pull anchor on stop one I pull in a nice keeper calico. Sweet!

Next stop, farther down backside of cat.... I pulled a smaller 10-12# yellow and from there they just turned into rats but i think end of day we ended with 10 Yellow Tail total. I pull another legal Calico. Captain is working his ass off to put kids on fish for a family and it was pretty cool to see. Got one of them on a yellow, hats off sir! This sport turns into a bonito hell fest again quick and I start tossing them back....Deckhands see's me doing this and i get lit up with another smart comment of "Hey what are you doing dont do that!!??" I reply, "Im not going to eat these so im not keeping them". Deckhand Replies, "Its ok, someone else will take them".... ok cool I guess ill keep catching them and keeping them for others although we are wide open on them every stop. Odd but whatever.

We make our way back around to the front and make a few more stops running at a snails place, current was pretty crazy in the spots we fished. Ended up limiting on Bonito so we started throwing them all back and called it a day. Crew starts their boat cleaning process and the more seasoned deckhand starts making his round for fish cleaning, he gets to us and we tell him we want to filet just the yellowtail and Bass and to leave the Bonito whole, and thats where it all went downhill.... Deckhand proceeds to tell us that we can have them gut it or filet it but wont leave it whole. We reply with, we dont need all those Bonito and were trying to throw them back, we are just going to toss them in an industrial grinder for our dogs. Deckhand replys with, well we bled each one of those fish and threw them in the cooler vs leaving them in the sacks which keeps the meat better and thats how they make their money, so he replys again, do we want it gut or filet'd..... LOL. This guy is laying it on thick and has no shame in his game. I step in and say look, we arent going to have those touched so leave them whole or you can keep all of them and he storms off in a fury. ok all good.

We get to jackpot weigh in, My buddies fish is the clear winner next to the other non crews caught fish, my buddy celebrates and 2 mins later they call him over and essentially told him hey we cant actually give you jackpot because we helped you fight the fish. My buddy has been on a boat 3 times max and doesnt really know the ins and outs of Jackpot rules nor did we cover them so at this point he is pretty pissed and they keep arguing back and forth. The boat is pretty silent as they go back and forth and deckhand starts to throw some more personal jabs at my buddy and then storms off with the filet knife to go back to work in the customer service industry. I try to cool down my friend and tell him its all good not the end of the world, Deckhand comes back up to try and reason again and my buddy is heated and is not understanding why he was asked to hand over his rod twice and for that he loses jackpot. Deckhand gets frustrated and replies with "bro why are you being such a chick" and all verbal hell breaks lose again.... again deckhand storms off back to the board. my buddy exchanging words the whole time............ Chill dude, its a jackpot....

Captain comes down and tries to put out the flame, they both have a civilized convo and the captain essentially word for word says "that fish was in the kelp and there is no way you were going to land it if we didnt help.... I step in at that bullshit remark and call him out. Sure they helped but that was a cocky ass assumption that we couldnt fish and luck isnt involved. They essentially stalemate out and the captain says you guys can just not ride on this boat again, my buddy and I are blown away at the professionalism and customer service. The jackpot no one cared about, the douchy remarks were the offenders here, but it got better.

We get back into the breakwall and we all start squaring up and low and behold we are being forced to pay this fish cleaning charge per person for Bonito that we didnt want or need. Hell i was trying to throw them back and got stopped all so they could rake in cash at the end of the stop. Hilarious system they have as even the captain comes over the loud speaker and will not park until everyone pays up on that filet money.

Long story short, we wont be going back and I hope this can educate others on how to avoid a shitty experience on the water. Back to SD we go. Oh and I never did get any of my calico meat. Thanks Pursuit!
Sorry for the bad trip. I always stick with two boats, the Victory and Enterprise because I like their system and I know they won’t pull stuff over on me likr that. Just remember at the end of the day, there is always other boats you can spend your money at. I hope this post hurts their buisness. Have you thought about posting in the inshore forum so more people see it, or the fishing chit chat

Tino fishes his ass off- you're in good hands

You sir are absolutely right about that!

When we boarded the boat everyone thought we were headed for SCI, but that was not the case at all instead we headed for the home guard at SBI and man was it a great trip. 104 yellows ranging from about 18 pounds to several being over 30. Deck hands knew their jobs, were friendly and helpful. Captain Tino busted his ass not just putting us on fish but also on the deck cleaning, gaffing, even fishing up some yellows for the people that were not fortunate enough to catch any themselves.

Captain Tino does not tolerate any shit though which I am thankful for and if you get your line tangled with someone who has one hanging then you can expect to get cut off which might piss some off but honestly its your fault as you should always be paying attention to your line and following it around the boat. Sadly I see it all the time on other boats where people do not do this and loose fish themselves or cost other people their fish because the crew doesnt get involved quick enough or at all. Yes tangles and crossed lines happen even when you and the people around you are on the ball but most can be avoided simply by keeping track of where you are versus where people around you are.

I moved all over this board from stern to bow and starboard to port as I was throwing everything from bait to plastics and then to irons and I got to see how captain Tino and the deckhands Trevor and Blair interacted with passengers. I watched numerous times where they guided people on how to bring the fish in themselves. Most boats I have been on deckhands will grab your rod from you and fight the fish for a few minutes and then give it back but here on the Freedom they actually educated and guided you on how to pull the yellows from the kelp, how to turn their heads. I was seriously impressed at the professionalism and patience of the deck hands.

I will absolutely be putting some more trips on this boat with this crew on my books.

FYI, If you want to vent on the situtation you've had or anyone else that's had issues with the boat/crew, Save your time and energy complaing to the boats Captain or the boats Owners and direct it to either or all of the following Owners of 22nd landing in Writing to, Mark Pisano, Paul Strasser and Danny Strunk at 141 W. 22nd street, San Pedro, Ca, 90731. Until people speak up about the problems to the Owners of 22nd st landing, about the Boat/Crew problems, It will continue to go on indefinitely!

Highly doubt they would care much.

Their boat, their rules. If you don't like how the boat is run. You don't have to patronize it.

Like any other business, they have a right to refuse service.

Like any other customer, you can spend your money where you like.

It is what it is....take it with a grain of salt.

You missed what I said!! Write to one or all of the OWNERS OF 22ND SPORTFISHING! Mark, Paul or Danny. I have been on the other boats the run, Some of the owners also own part of the San Pedro bait company, The Boats,Independence, Freedom, Amigo, Native Sun and Point Loma Sportfishing! If you have been Fishing on ANY of these boats they are partners with since they became partial owners or Owners you will notice how Clean the boat is and the professionalism the way the operation is ran!!! These 3 gentlemen are both excellent fisherman and Very business oriented. I have personally fished on their boats and could vouch for their operations! These 3 Individuals WILL NOT TOLERATE the way the Pursuit operates within their landing. Mark, Paul or Danny Did Not Become Successful Or well known running their operations as the Pursuit has been doing over the Years.

Now that is funny!! Thanks for the laugh. I grew up in the south bay and one of the reasons I have spent so much time on the water is early on I discovered I could jump in a skiff and within minutes be far away from the A-hole surf scene.

My other option is to buy my own boat. Because we all know its fishing utopia. Eveyone becomes polite on the water and you never run into dicks. Yea right.

While what you say is true you've missed the biggest upside of running your own boat. I don't have to share the deck with asshole crew or fishermen.

If I recall correctly, there was a thread a while back about this same boat muscling its way into spots already occupied by private boats. It seemed to be a common occurrence.

Seriously - I don't ride the sportboats often but the Freedom with the capt and crew they have is on my short list. Work hard to find fish and no BS.

Please remember boats do change crew and ownership. But, often the boat will unfairly carry a bad reputation for many years. Making a profit in a sportfishing operation is tuff. During COVID it is probably impossible in many cases. I agree, notifying the owners of the landing of problems is a good idea. I can recall when Frank Hale owned 22nd St. Even back then there were good boats and some that were not. BTW, I believe the spelling of Mark's last name may be "Paisano"?

When Ive taken jackpots, Ive given it to the crew. I figured it was good karma. A few times the head deckhand or who ever was collecting tab/cleaning money at the end would tell me not to worry about the balance. My choice and I was happy to do it.

But, I started seeing more and more shenanigans over time, from intentional mislabeling fish, leaving a JP fish in the hold, tail clipping a bait fish to claim it was on the troll, to boats charging a 20% fee for administering the jackpot.

When I quit participating, I enjoyed the day more not worrying about all that. And, best of all, I got to enjoy a nice nap rather than waiting up for the weigh in.

    Don’t miss them at all.
Remember when I got ripped off on the jackpot from that dead head captain from the boat up north? Won’t say the boats name. Crock of crap!
