    we got this http://youtu.be/V2d6CoBuqqE

the fish hold measures 43" for reference as to the size of the fish, it wasn't that big, BUT, we had never caught one..We got it about 11:30, water temp was 70, water blue and calm. Hit a black & purple lure.

what ya think...is it a shortbilled spearfish? you ever catch one?

Congrats! Nice fish. It looks like a juvenile. I know most of the billfish guys out here release all the fish. No judging here though. I will probably keep the next decent sized marlin I catch but I still release most.

ya thats a shortbill spearfish. Talk about a rare catch especially off point loma. We call them chuckers or hebi here in hawaii. Probably the most rare billfish overall in the ocean. Guys come specifically here to complete their catch off all the billfish species.

What's not cool about it? They dont grow very big as it is... it's a cool fish and a rarity around here.... not to be mistaken (as so many do) with it truly being rare.

Just like an Opah.... they are out there.... just not caught often!

Nice catch, and yes, very cool!!
