8/9/2021 Look at the size of the bite marks on the surf croaker used as bait! Monday funday.

Landed a surf croaker first cast. Two hours after low tide on a strong and sloppy mixed up incoming. Nice catching a big bait quickly. I could not catch one after two hours of trying on the 6th into darkness.

Wanting to switch over to using a big bait after loosing 2 large fish on the 5th on light tackle. Had a 40lb bait rig on stand by to fish a (catch your own fish your own bait).

Pinned the surf croaker on the larger 40lb rig and it took serious effort to get the bait away from the beach with the incoming tide. Multiple trys from multiple angles in the hole and the bait finally caught a lucky current and drifted/swam far out. Had to wade out to shoulder depth in pounding shorebreak. As far as I wanted/could let the bait out, love that. All the other deployments. Resulted in the bait staying close to shore due to the conditions

Got bit when the strong bait was still lively and spit. The fish bit into the dorsal spine of the bait which could had caused the spit or the bait struggled and got free. Fish don't have nerves in their mouth so they can get spiked good by spines and not care or feel it

Looks like a Roosterfish bite. The bait was not bit from the side so a good size fish.

Now the surf croaker will be consumed on land by human🤙🏾 maybe cat I have not decided yet

Looks like the 40 pound line stripped the scales off, maybe from casting, or from being twisted up in the line. That's what it looks like to me.

So you do have a surf rig.

Uhoh Tony. Nothing is worst then a (lougio) like :D

I should mention location. Costa Rica

My Southern California surf rig. Is 6lb leader using sand crabs or gulp

Costa Rica surf rig, I will fish that same style 6lb gulp rig but with 12lb leader targeting small fish. More action

My next surf rig is for larger fish. 30-60lb leader.

I have 2 main surf rigs. One for targeting small fish and one for big fish. Not a universal rod

The other side of the bait had a tear and the bait got bit. But I see your thinking. All bruised and gummed. A roosterfish mouth is like a yellow but they clamp harder

Yes and no Tony. That is a popper rod and a spinner casting jig rod and not a live bait rod or dead stick perch rod. Although the rod will work just fine from the beach with a big live bait. Being a 9 footer

The rod could be fished from a LR boat or a skiff or from shore. I would never fish this rod from the surf in Southern California for (corbina or perch or croaker) in a rod holder. Like you would with a torpedo sinker or pyramid sinker, classic style. Dead sticked in the rod holder (rays and guitar fish). Pier fishing style. I walk the beach and wade in the water and my feet are never planted for more then a few seconds. I appreciate the pointers. Sit back and you will see something different

This is not a perch rod to be dead sticked in a rod holder.

Looks like a big rooster to me.

Everything else with a mouth that big has got some teeth in it.

I know for a fact that they'll eat an 18 inch long ladyfish no problem. A big bridled circle hook on that bait might get it done.

Gonna go hit the beach in 45 minutes. Start trying to catch a big bait 20 minutes before low. Hopefully have a big bait as the tide flips. That gives a 2-3 hour incoming tide window. The swell is only 4-5' today its been 5-10' for a month straight. And this beach break is twice as big as the surf report. Like Blacks Beach in San Diego. Big canyon out front. Grows waves

It's not easy, especially in winter or everyone would be doing it. This beach is one of the heaviest and strongest beach breaks in Central America. With a big rivermouth that flows mellow in the summer and can look like the amazon river or the mighty mississippi in the winter. Native locals wear life jackets beach fishing. They think I'm nuts, especially tow surfing with the jet ski :D

Arrived and thought someone was trying to chair fish the north end of the hole. They are just relaxing.

Only found a pelican waiting to fish. Low tide and the hole is deep enough for a pelican to free float around in and for the whitewater not to roll completely through. This is a few hundred meters south of the rivermouth. In the summer the terns beach at the rivermouth and the pelicans float around on the surface of the ocean. As soon as the terns and pelicans pick up and fly and and start dive bombing bait. That's when it's ON. Out flowing rivermouth (mid tide or less) flushes nutrients out of the rivermouth. Which the bait fish feed on. Bringing in game fish

The tide chart, I use is about 25 minutes behind. The tide times change a tad for each surf break and its off, always behind, whoever did the calculation for this beach, did it wrong. So I can lag and still make the time I want 🤙🏾 Got mini nibbled and could not set up to get the bite tight. Swung and got half my 2 inch gulp back. Bait fish of the small variety that would not load up. Wanted that for sure. For redeployment on the live 40lb bait rig. Put in a few hours for that single mini nibbler

Some dude 100 meters down the beach was wading. Took his trunks off. I almost fired my gulp at him. Last week a good looking girl took her top off while wading. That was ok. Gave me a semi

So the pelicans use the big holes and troughs on low tide to float around in and get pushed around by small white water. That are dying out in the hole. It's actually like a pelican ride. They can climb over small rolling white waters and ride a white water in for over 100 feet, while floating. Fun for them. I think

The Pelican ride. This pelican didn't fly for over 30 minutes. Just floated around riding waves. It's like a whirl pool and tread mill so the pelican can do donuts in the hole, floating

Then there are humans getting sucked into the hole on a higher tide. While paddling on a surfboard. Hard to paddle out of. Been there hundreds of times. But when the waves are good :D not junk

Sucks paddling out of these troughs. Look closely that's a dude. No danger with flotation and a strong swimmer but still sucks getting sucked into one or ending a wave in one and having to get out of it. There is no current remotely close to this strength in San Diego.

Panamanian Brama rooster. Also there are jardinero, gallo fino and chiricano chickens and rooster that provide about 20 fresh assorted variety of eggs daily, from the coop.

Kind of on a smaller scale. They both make good big baits. BFT smash bluefish

Surf croaker are more like a drum on your side. Lost one today in 2 inches of water.
