Every year I host an annual charter on the Voyager with captain Todd.
We made our ways to the yellowfin grounds and I woke up at 5:30am. The night captain said he marked a few fish and a few others dropped flatfalls and we hooked up 3 fish and boated 1.
Soon after we started our search for the yellowfin. There were a lot of boats out, sporties and pb. Anytime we saw a sportie stopped they would be surrounded by private boats. At one time I saw maybe 30 private boats around one sportie.
We searched and searched and it was around 10am without a stop. Captain made the call the move off a bit away from the fleet and at 11am we marked some fish. The deckie brailed bait and I dropped a nice dean and got bit.
From then on it was a solid plunked bite with always 4-6 hanging.
Some of the people fishing was their first time and the key to getting bit was getting the bait away and swimming.
Captain Todd as always helped everyone and it’s really amazing to watch him fish. He had maybe a 80-90% hookup ratio. Hook and pass making sure everyone was catching. The yellowfin quality was nice, not the smaller footballs.
By 4pm we had limits, plugged the fish hold and also they brought out a massive kill bag and filled that to the max as well. A really nice 5 hour drift.
20-25lb Fluor, size 4-2 hook.
A great charter and will be one to remember. Too much fun.
