Life just threw you a memory.
Wish I could remember such a thing.
This was 25 years ago: Pre-digital camera, pre-braid, pre-disc drag, etc. so we "tried to chase it" but when it went straight down that was all she wrote. Fun while it lasted though.
Awsome picture and great memory for sure!
I have only been spooled once in 35 years of private boat fishing. Same situation. 60 to 80 lb class bigeye on 15# with a newell 229. Went straight down. Most reports of people getting spooled the fish did not go down though.
Congrats, nice job, looks like a great day of fishing.
I was on a 3/4 day with the Phoenix back in the day (now the Jig Strike I believe) when it was at the Hyatt Islandia. (Islandia sportfishing is history) John chased a 100+ with me on the bow. Once we got on top of the fish it gill plated me. Best 30 min of fun I ever had on a Penn 500. That reel held up and I don't know how. Some of the rock cod and yellowtail trips on that boat were epic.
Very nice Yellow, and love the swordie story! Bummer you couldn't get him to go!
Good report and nice YT.
I too fished with John on the Phoenix. Sacks of Rockcod from 4 or 5 drops, wide open yellowtail on squid and Calico Cows on brown bait were epic also!
Very nice yellow! And way to take a shot at the swordy! Definitely looked BIG. I don't care who you are or what gear you have when you see Elvis you pitch a bait. You wont forget anytime soon, hopefully next time he takes you for a ride!
