    Oops. Title should read 7-15

Fished with Steve on the Trailer Trash Sunday, 7-15. Forecast was for an afternoon west wind, so we fished our way up PV, hoping to get blown home. We hit a few spots for some bass on the way up the line. Then, in the usual place, Steve is up on something nice.

I’m hoping for a big ass bass, but nope, it’s a 20# nuisance flatfish. People really target these? I sunk a gaff in him, and despite being spiked a few times, he went ballistic on the deck.

Anyways, we continued fishing up the line to Rocky Point, scoring a calico here and there, along with a couple sculpin and a baby BSB. The calicos were in all their spawning glory colors. This guy wasn’t all that big, but look at the color on his cheeks.

The stiff ESE wind had not shifted to W yet, so we beat our way back down the line and to the shoe. No big deal in my heavy Robalo as driving into white caps was sure easier than driving into the west swell we had in the AM.

We hit a few spots on the shoe until we hit THE ONE. Calico every cast! We hit maybe a dozen rocks on the shoe before bagging it at 2:30. Would have stayed longer but someone had plans.

Back at Steve’s, he schooled me on how to clean a but. Nice having an ex long range deckhand as a fishing partner.

Totals: 40 or so bass, mostly calicos, to 4 pounds, 2 sculpin, a baby BSB and a 20# butt. Most fish including the butt were caught on 4” Kman Special swimbaits, but a good many were caught on 60 and 80 gram Colt Snipers. The 60 really killed it. I think it was brown and chrome. There was very little current along PV and the temps were 68ish.

Once again we didn’t sink the boat, get arrested or towed. It was a great day on the water with a good friend.

After a months long search, I scored a 2017 Yukon Denali 4WD with the 6.2L engine and 3600 miles in Arizona last week. It tows the Robalo like a dream and now I have a big ass safety margin as it can tow 8100 pounds. I’ll be selling my beloved, garage kept, Chevy Trailblazer LTZ (02/114K miles) on the classifieds board soon. It’s an awesome road trip/medium towing rig or just plain family car. PM me if you want to see this well-maintained gem. I’ll be asking $5K for it.

Great report Kurt...we launched out of Cabrillo yesterday. Fished the shoe, but not near the luck you had. We got a half dozen bass and a fatty skulpin...all released.
