We had an absolutely amazing time fishing down in BOLA as usual. Although rumors of traffic and restrictions at Mexicali almost caused us to call it off, we decided to try anyway. To our surprise, the drive down was a breeze and we were not even asked for papers. On to the fishing! When we got there I fished a spoon at sunset and got onto a nice spotty/ lizardfish bite. It was a nice warmup but we wanted to get on to filling the freezer. Day 1 was fantastic, we caught bait very quickly and then headed out early to the grounds. I started with a yo-yo and got bit on the first drop. Nice yellow around 16 pounds. In the next few hours of fishing, we picked off nice grade yellows off the bottom. We had around 6-8 yellows before deciding to switch to fly line. Immediately, we hooked up like crazy and quickly got our limit. We headed back at 11:15. On day 2 bait was even more plentiful than the first, we had to have caught a bait tank full in about 15 minutes. Day 2 was a bit slower but great nonetheless. I started with a yo-yo and picked off a nice cabrilla and threw back a short yellow. Then I switched to fly line with a Lexa 300 and a rainshadow 79l. I wanted to have a little fun! I caught a nice one around 18 pounds but then fishing got a little slower and we moved spots. The second spot didn’t have the amount of the first one but it made up for it in quality. We caught 2 yellows on the higher end of the 20’s (one about thirty) and got a few more about 15-20lbs. But perhaps the most memorable catch was a 50lb gulf grouper caught on the dropper loop. Nice one! We ended the day trying to catch some Cortez porgie but ended up with a nice golden spot grouper. Thanks for an amazing trip Juan! We hope to be back soon!
