Launched out of Dana Point at 2:30am. Picked up a half scoop of deans and began searching outside the harbor for maks. Took us well over an hour but finally made 20 pieces of beautiful maks. Came out prepared this time for big bft equipped with the afco kite, double trouble rig, helium tank, balloons, 130# & 100# wind ons, tiagra 50 loaded with 130 mono for the kite, a tac ii 16 loaded with 80# spectra with a 100# flouro wind on, poppers, colt snippers, flat falls, etc. Of course along with a ton of other rod and reels for the smaller grade bft. We got out to 209 by gray and proceeded west for another 6 miles. Nada but scattered birds. Temp was 70.6 @ the 209. Weather was a bit sloppy but not to bad. Looked at the 181, 312, and everything in between for nada. Saw one small foamer east of the 209 that sank out quick. Went back West of the 209 where the birds were thick and flew the kite with the double trouble rig with 2 big maks over killer meter marks for zero results. Seemed to me like the bft were just off on Friday in that zone. Looked out towards the 277 and my boy spotted a killer paddy. Pitched a big mak on it and it got inhaled by this dodo (see pic). We got one more dodo just a little smaller. Saw more under paddy but they were all lock jaw. Not the big bft we were looking for but I'll take it any day of the week! Searched for the toad bft till about 5pm for no love. Next time!
