Coastal yellowtail, offshore kelp paddy yellows, dorado, tuna. 6 days is really not enough to get time down south. You may spend the entire trip fishing bluefins.

Multi-day trips like that are all about the individual boat. The Mexican government requires expensive special permits for Guadalupe Island, and very few boats spend the money. And STILL the government can close the island whenever they want to, regardless of issued permits. You need to decide what your personal goal is. If you want to catch big tuna, then spending four or five days within 200 miles of San Diego will get it done, much more fishing opportunity than spending a couple of days traveling down and back and only there for two days.

You should expect Tuna and Yellowtail fishing.
Strackle99 (above), probably has the core trip right.
Depending on when/where/whether maybe also 1/2 day of bottom Grouper or Reds fishing.
Wahoo are very unlikely, but Dorado may happen.
As for whether to bring Troll or Kite gear -- call the boat shortly before it leaves.
Yeah, that makes for a lot of gear choices and tackle options.
    Heck of a dilemma :-)

Back in ‘16 on my 10 day at the end of Sept the first Wahoo was caught just south of the Coronado’s! The only one trolling was Tim Turis and he scored! The RSW wasn’t on at the time so we had it for dinner… thanks Turd!
52.4# about 20NM south of South Island on a full size orange/black Marauder. It’s one of the fish that I most proud of catching!

A few years back, on a 6 day, Andy took us to the Ridge to fish a couple of days. It was a memorable trip, Yellowfin were plentiful although small and we had some big Yellowtail along with a few Wahoo. Oh, sharks were plentiful as well.

Someone was just telling me this story as I was standing in a parking lot selling him an Intruder. Said he was on that trip with you. He told me you catch a lot of wahoo and that you would use and appreciate the Hooker Intruders. He had no idea. I about fell over after hearing that...small world stuff

If only the Wahoo and better grade Yellowfin would show up at the Coronados…

When I would do 17 day trips from San Diego to Hurricane Bank we would get about 9 days of fishing time. Rest was travel time...San Diego to Hurricane, Hurricane to Cabo, Cabo back to San Diego. Ride down, fly back...although I always rode the boat up from Cabo with the crew and a couple of other passengers.

I would pass Alijos Rocks after about 42 hours and think I am halfway there!!!!

6-day trips that aren't going to Guadalupe are a little wonky in what can be done as many of the others mentioned.
After Cedros closed for Sportboats the last 6 days I did we went to the ridge and fished for 1.5 days on the all-you-can-catch yellow tail and headed home stopping hear and there for bottom fish as the area from SD to the ridge was void of life.

I'd rather fish for 5 day's solid than travel for 4.5 days on an 8
The 8 day trips I’ve done we’ve almost always fished after 24 hours travel, then daily until we’re home. Sometimes we’ll use the last day as a travel day, which I prefer because that means we stayed longer down south and had to beeline home.

Penn 6-day trip last year on the Vagabond, last week of July. Lackey bombed the guys down to Alijos, where they got close to limits of 20-40lb yellowfin AND a real good number of wahoo. No big Rocks YT, but they had time enough for several stops on the way back up (patties or "beach," don't recall) and put a whole bunch of pretty decent YT onboard.

That trip would normally have done Guadalupe, but they sure made the most of what was available on 6-day trip.

Conditions dictate where you go. I know one boat last year went to the Rocks on a 6 day and had great fishing in the middle of July but for only 2.5 days. The Izorline 6 day on the AA stayed local and fished every day. Bluefin the first night and the next day and night. Moved inside and fished paddies for Dorado and Yellows for all you want. After that, it was back to the Bluefin grounds then out to the Cortez for nice yellows. Hit the Bluefin one more time on the way in. It was a stellar trip with everyone getting a BF over 150# and most getting limits of BF with lots of yellows and Dorado. Pick your poison and have a great time.

u got to ask each captain what they are willing to do! ....

You said...... " you think they will be targeting no Guadalupe " ......

I miss Lupe every day. Talk is that maybe in a few years it MIGHT open again.

I fished Lupe many years back and I sucked there as i learned it. Tough place to fish. Then it got closed. It opened again and I figured it out & had many good trips. Now it is closed again.

Various factions in the Mex government argue over Lupe access. Conapesca, the fishing folks, are good with us fishing there. The "national Park Service", as Lupe is a Nat Park, do not want anyone there ( diving, shark cage'rs, fishing, etc ). So Nat Park folks won the battle no matter how much we pay.

I am still on a 6 day Penn charter on the Vagabond that for many years( 10+, actually can not remember ) that would be going to Guadalupe Is. to fish. Would look forward to that trip as a definite Lupe trip each year as 6 days seemed not long enough for the ridge/Alijos area and 6 days of BFT does not make sense.

Last year, with Lupe closed, Mike Lackey made te call to go to Alijos and it paid off, for me, on wahoo as I am an ADDICT. 2 ish travel days to Alijos, 2 days ish to fish, 2 days ish travel back. The timing worked out great and the fish cooperated. Nicodemus commented that we limited on YFT. I only remember the wahoo ! do remember Mike had us fishing the whole way back: a reds stop, then a lingcod stop, etc.

Going on the 6 day again this year. For the next year, 2024, it should be extended to a seven day trip due to the Lupe closure and the extra day gives 1 more day down Alijos/wahoo way.

With that said, I love the Penn Vag trip and the folks I know from it. Will keep doing it till I am gone. Personally looking at dropping an 8 day trips for 10 day trips just for a few more wahoo days--- more fishing days in the wahoo area. But that is die to my wahoo addiction.

wish they were around the Coronados more like Tim Turis was talking about. HEard rumor that El Nino is starting up again
