Launched out of mission bay went strait to the 9 mile. Lots of big whales out there but no fish. Followed the border half way to the corner and and found a giant paddy with another boat working it. Hailed him on the radio and he was nice enough to let us in. First drift past I pulled in a nice 8lb yellow on a 30g jigpara light gear. The next few drifts produced 5 oversized jack mackerel at 24”kept one tossed the rest. Heard a call on the radio about big fast moving bonito on the 9. Headed back but missed the bite. Ended up working our way back from whistler to new hope rock. Conditions got a bit breezy and our drift was bad so we only nailed one legal bass. From there we b lined it to the 6 mile bank. The wind calmed down and the bite picked up around the tide change. Finished the day pulling up nice quality reds and one flag.

at 24" those jack mackerel were worth more than the firecracker yellows in my opinion. Excellent table fare and big enough to be worth cleaning/eating. They are jacks just like yellows but actually better eating!!! I'd prefer 5 of them to any one yellow...we've all ate plenty of yellows. a missed opportunity to really enjoy some great eating fish!
