Went out yesterday on the Freelance. I was happy we headed straight to Cat in hopes of finding the bonito schools and maybe a yellow or white. We stopped by Avalon and bought some squid end headed to the spot. We started on the back side maybe towards the middle of the island (I don't knot the backside all that well) to look for some yellowtail. Captain Rusty saw marks but there were no biters just some smaller bottom fish mostly (blue perch and stuff). Stayed there for a while because some folks were enjoying filling their bags with perch. We then went around the quarry side and tried a couple drifts and then up more towards the camps and anchored. The fish just weren't really happening besides some small bottom fish and mackerel. A couple decent sheepshead. I actually got the skunk yesterday because I was sticking it out gamefish because I can fish shallow water bottom fish anytime on my kayak. Not a total loss- some folks got some tasty smaller bottom fare and a couple nicer sheeps. It was a beautiful day out on the water and always nice seeing the island looking so green.

Thanks for the report. In a lot of decades of experience, I've found that the fishing is always pretty scratchy for yellows and wsb for a day or two following a storm. The water cools off suddenly and doesn't go back up very quickly. With a grunion run happening for several days along the beaches now, it would have been very different on your kayak targeting halibut.

Yeah it's been a great halibut year. Thanks for the reminder about the run

Great report and info. If the bonito aren't off the quarry early and late, the current is wacko. LOL
Glad ya got out for a long day looking. Many miles on Freelance here since launched by Brockman
with Norris Tapp and Chris Goble over many many years. Always great bunch of regulars on stern.
I like many miss those days! Maybe next time the bonies will be wide open for ya. Get that halibut !

Yeah doesn't sound like the best size quality mostly right now though. With the price of gas and the price of a boat fare in SD, I'm gonna wait till the quality goes up a little before making the investment. Freelance is a lot closer and cheaper for me

Still a pretty scratchy on and off bite though IMO. Good to see they're having some good days, but not consistent enough for me to want to book an overnight
