Any tips on using 4 Oz thread spools on a custom power wrap lathe? Been using this machine forever but the carriage isn’t great with a 4 Oz spool. Sometimes I’ll load it on a 1oz spool but that kinda sucks too. Now I’m using a wood 1 Oz spool sanded down to fit inside but it’s sloppy. Any ideas?

modify your thread carriage with a taller spool pin and then use a sleeve to pair the 4 oz thread spool to the taller spool pin that should take out all the slop..
Good Luck

I have this carriage I bought a long time ago. Maybe find a dowel and drill a hole in it to slide down onto the post. This carriage is a POS by the way.
Just thought there might be some handy insert I could buy for it
Thanks

well you can give it a try, I never buy 4 oz spools for that reason , I just pay a little more and use the 1 oz spools as I use a 4 spool thread carriage that I made and works great...
here is a couple pics:

I had a nylon bushing I got a Home Depot. Put a little tape on and stuck it in the hole.

I use a couple of the nylon thingeees from the local hardware store. Can't find them in the big box places in my hood. Have no idea what the original purpose is.

I need a ride.
Pac bay thread carriages use this white spacer for 4oz spools. I lost mine a while ago, but i switch all my thread over to 1oz spools either way. Its easier to work with.

Im sure you can find something like that at a hardware store.

I'm loading 1 oz. spools off the 4 oz. spools with a 1/4" dowel as a spindle for the small spool and a cordless drill.I can load a small spool in a couple minutes.

Aren’t the spoils designed for the thread to come off vertically? I transfer to small spools and use bobbins. C38499FD-6505-46F2-A781-5DBD495F7A0D.jpegSo I don’t have this issue. I have some small 100yrd wood spools and I save all my used plastic spools as well. If I decide to use that thread for a project .. I make a 2 small spools. I do that for madera thread as well.

Thanks for all the tips. I got a bunch of Holland thread that I use for some restorations and lucky just to find it in any spool. Thought there might be some gizmo to make it easier. I’ll try and find those nylon things, those look ok, better than loading it onto smaller spools anyway

I just got a dowel that fit the inside of the spool and drill a hole up the center to fit the post on my CPW.

I drilled out with 1/4" drill and it presses right into bottom of spool. Works pretty good and I had a bag of them already.
