Heard the BFT were on the chew so my buddy and I went for it on a whim.

The day before - 15 anglers, 30 BFT.

This day, quite different, but that's fishing for you.

Total was 38 anglers, 7 BFT and 9 bonito.

I was one of the lucky ones hooking into 3, landing 2 and passing off the 3rd to my buddy.

we were about 40 miles out. Semi-sloppy out there but definitely fishable. The boat is great. Clean, roomy, bunks available for $5 charge and crew are very helpful. Tuna were cookie cutter models, around 20-23 lbs. Bonito were 8-9 lbers with the biggest over 13 lbs on the digit scale. 17951435_10213322756332193_3919233276199031073_n.jpg 18010157_10213322756212190_3831270733702723825_n.jpg 18033510_10213322756052186_1492680363451992957_n.jpg 18034077_10213322756732203_4502790985249022938_n.jpg 18057078_10213322756292192_7095358946220324575_n.jpg

Tried the flatfall but zero takers. Everything I caught on this date was caught on bait (flylined dine with 17# or 20# fluorocarbon leader)

Yeah, I didn't hook one but no love lost. It would have ended up in the freezer as hoop bait for the October opener. :)

No accident when 1/3 of fish landed on a trip with 30 ppl, are hooked by 1 dude. There's blind luck, but then there's knowledge and tactics. I chuckle inside when the skunk guys say they were doing the same thing as the guy who hooked up several times. Great report, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the compliment. BFT are definitely a different creature from YFT or yellowtail. I've got a strategy in mind and its worked so far. It'll be interesting if it works next time out.

Thanks Sherm. I think i'm going to be trying a 7 dayer soon. I'll need to pick your brain about gear.

My first trip of the season so I'm thrilled to cross that one off the list early!

You sometimes have to go when they are there because they can disappear in a snap. I was glad to get the day off on short notice and give it a go. The last time I did a 3/4 trip I went on an extended trip out of Seaforth and got a 60 lber. Again, i got bit twice and landed 1 of the 5 lunker BFT on that trip. :D

I keep hearing to use the small hooks. Any truth to that?

    Thanks, Mick

I'm not 100% sure. I didn't ask. Pretty much southwest of the point in mexican waters. Maybe close to the 302?

I hooked one on a size 1 flyliner hook with 20# fluoro. Then 2nd and 3rd hookups were virtually instantaneous, less than 8 second soaks and i had a size 2 ringed hook with 17# fluoro.

The crew recommended size 1, j hooks so i went with that to start and went smaller.

The best part, I was telling somebody that I haven't been the first person in the water during my first 2 hook ups. In fact, i was the LAST person in the water, taking my time at the bait tank, getting a decent bait. 3rd hook was instant (5 seconds tops) after finding space at a crowded rail. The guy who overheard me came over and laughed that he noticed i was indeed the last one in the water. Go figure...
