Steve and I fished his Whaler Sunday, 4-16. Should have been my turn to drive but I have a locked brake. Friggin trailers! The forecast was for a west wind late AM. We fished the shoe so when the wind picked up, we could fish downwind back to the barn.
Anyways, we found fish here and there. Never caught more than 3 or 4 on a drift and only a couple drifts repeated successfully. It was a one here, one there kind of day. Water temp was 55-56 and there was a downhill current. Wind was weird. It was capping from the west first thing, then died and gave us maybe 4 hours of mercy, then back to capping from the west..
Hot lure today was a chovie-looking silver and black jig that BDer Adam helbert makes. Kman Special swimbaits caught plenty too. Everything was on the bottom, so jigging off the bottom or a slow grind along the bottom caught fish.
We ended up with 61 fish. 60/40 calico/sandy. Calicos to 4#, sandies to 3.5#. Bycatch was 2 reds. All fish were released except for one red. Something was going on in San Pedro. A couple F-18s did several flybys. That was cool.
This lure has had the crap bit out of it, has lost most of its paint and the silver scales are all scratched up but it keeps catching fish.
Here is one of Adam’s jigs (left) next to a JP jig.
