Headed down south with my buddy yesterday to get him his first bluefin for Father’s Day.

Left Mission bay a little after 5am with a half scoop of amazing sardines. Water got a little choppy south of the islands but was really nice overall. Got to the zone around 7:15am and joined the other 100 boats that were already there lol. Drove around for about an hour until we found some decent marks around 100 ft down. 3 minute soak and my buddy was on! Went for a hard 20 second run and then snapped the 30lb mono clean. The next 20 minutes we landed two on flyline with 50lb braid to a 25/30lb flouro leader and size 1 J hook and Size 2 circle. My buddy was stoked on his first bluefin! Both mine and his were about 25lbs. Lost another one after those. After that the bite turned off and we weren’t metering anymore so we moved.

Found some more marks of better grade fish that wanted to bite but they beat us up pretty good. Lost 3 more on live bait including one ~80lb grade that almost spooled us. Hooked it on my Talica 10 with 65lb braid and a 30lb mono top shot. Fought it for about 30 minutes and got it to deep color twice before it made one more run and snapped the top shot.

Ran out of sardines around 11:30. Was able to hook two more and land one of them (35lb) on a 100g blue/pink colt sniper We fished flat falls and sinker rigs throughout the day also but didn’t get hit on either.

Got our asses kick a little bit it was an awesome trip altogether! We finished with 3 and lost 5. Left right when the sun started coming out around noon. Had a nice flat ride back to the bay and we were at the dock before 2pm. This seasons looking very good so far, go get em!

Also, looking for a larger bait tank if anyone has one for sale lol

Nice catch and way to stay with it. Get yourself a popper rod and when you run out of bait go search the fringe of the fleet for breezers and foamers to finish off the day; the afternoons are usually better for that kind of fishing and you'll wet your pants on your first popper fish!

Thanks for the report.

Actually had a popper set up in the first pic 👍 I've gotten some good ones on the poppers before but unfortunately we didn't see any foamers that day. Next time
