    Good afternoon Jim,

I'm unfortunately not on your Excel trip.

...60 days for my Excel Colonello 10 day, but who's counting .

(I'll be looking forward to your informative reports, as per usual.)

Best regards, tight lines & screaming reels!

    Hi Danny!

Yeah, I was on a couple of waiting lists for trips this Fall, and when an opening popped up on the Phenix 10-day, I jumped. I think it took me all of 90 seconds to reply to Jason's email...

I have heard really good things about the trip, and I love the boat! I just hope that the sponsors won't be annoyed. I do have a very nice Phenix rod...which of course I'll bring...but I am a GUSA/United Composites guy for many years, so most of my sticks will be from the competition.

I have communicated some with Tex, and have exchanged posts with several others on this board, but I don't think I actually know anyone who will be on board. Well, that's not entirely true. For some reason the names "Eric Harner" and "Mike Lawson" seem very familiar. But other than that, I'll be meeting new friends on board.

Yes, I'm geeked, and already making a packing list.

    Hey Jim,

I fished with a Phenix Pro-Staffer on my last trip, and being UC Pro-Staff, I have to say that we had an awesome time! We all have our favorite brands, but we also all want to have a great time fishing. That said, if anyone wants to try out one of my rods, I am more than happy to let them, and if they want any info, I give it to them. We all use what works for us, and whether is is Chevy or Ford, I can tell them why I like my Toyota. ;) I know that your comment was tongue in cheek, but we fish in a small community and there is no reason that brand loyalty should get in the way of a good time. After all, the fishing is just a bonus, added on to a great vacation on the water.

Interesting take, Connor. I agree with you that you can always try something new, and find you like it better. The comments about blondes, brunettes, and redheads are apt enough, I guess. But I have to tell you that, while my comment was light-hearted and less-than-serious:

    1. I have seen a couple of reps get really upset by someone using a competitor's product, especially if they say how much they like using the competitor's gear.

    2. While I like my gear (and am proud of the gear I have), I will be aboard to have fun, catch some fish certainly, but especially to meet new friends and share the adventure.

In any case, I'm not in the market for new rods. Far from being "Rodless," I now have more than I can use!

    Thanks for the good wishes!

Thanks guys. I have retired from writing trip reports...these days it's all I can do to remember what happened to me this morning! Having said that, I have a feeling that this trip is going to be pretty memorable...

You replied in exactly the spirit I thought you would. Sorry to hear that some folks were disappointed by your gear choice. We all spend plenty of $$$ on what we have, and I respect anyone's choice, even if I have a different opinion/preference. I know some dudes who are straight Shimano or Accurate guys, I fish mainly Okuma, but also have a few Daiwas (Plus a Penn and a Tiburon) mixed in. For my applications, I fish what I feel works best. For rods, I know where I stand, but everyone has something that works for them. That is the great thing about this sport, we do have options, and they grow greater every day.

    Jim,

I am sure that you and everyone else on the boat will have a great time. I'll be out there at much the same time on the Intrepid, please save some wahoo for us. The Excel is #1 on my list of boats to try, just have to figure out how/when.

I've only had one rep ever give me any grief over my use of competitors equipment, but he was somewhat of a dick, in more ways than one.

    Have a great time!

Last year the Phenix rep was Ryan. Real cool guy and a heck of a fisherman too. He really gets into slinging jigs and bombs for hoo's. Very knowledgeable about Phenix rods but I cannot see him ever getting sideways about someone not using his product. My rods are like Heinz 57. Most are Penn, but I take some Calstars, Seekers, and one Lamiglas. Hope he's back again this year.
Bart if I catch a Sheepshead it's all yours. All I want is a picture of the ugly bastard. Not the fish, you...cause I know you will be grinning from ear to ear.
I got most of my stuff packed this last weekend. Will unpack and repack at least 2 times before I leave. Still have to set the drags on my reels. 14 total.
Chomping at the bits to get on the water, catch some fish, share the rail, see my buddies again, eat some dam fine food, have a few cocktails, and meet some new friends. Jim had called me from Mexico City (where he lives) back in 2014 and gave me some help and pointers for my first LR trip. I'm looking forward to meeting him and shaking his hand.
    Tex.

Alex should be back to being the Phenix rep this year. He won't give you any crap for using non-Phenix rods. Other than me, most will not be using Phenix rods. I'll have at least one UC, Black Hole and OC rods.
