Fished yesterday with LJ, (Slider) caught one Dorado. Lots of fog, choppy and then calm, then choppy, foggy, clear then calm. Crazy conditions, went to the 312 and back to 209. Lots of big kelp paddies, all but one empty. I think 90 miles total? Incredible amounts of Red Tide and filthy water.

Got to within 4 miles of Dana Point, started dumping our fantastic Sardines, small and medium, lots of firecrackers. Very healthy.

Looked off in the distance and said what's that, holy shit, huge Bluefin schools everywhere you looked. Damn, we had dumped about 90% of our bait still had a dozen decent left. LJ slid up to one of the foamers, I grabbed my sixty pound outfit, but no bites. LJ hooked up immediately on 25 pound test, big tuna, 250 yards later, goodbye.

Did this for two hours, several times surrounded by BF, wouldn't bite the heavy line, LJ fished with 40, no luck, didn't see any purpose in throwing lighter line, I had 30LB? Some fish were in the 25 to 40 pound range when they leaped out of the water, then there were the big boys! Back at the dock at 4pm after we ran out of bait. LJ threw a Popper numerous times right in the middle of the foamers, never touched it?

Earlier in the day I got spooled on 20 pound, don't know the species, off a porpoise school?

Thanks LJ, so much fun to finally get out on the water! A wishing I was fishing more often. Can't fish Sport Boats anymore, can't stand at the rail more than a few minutes, need a private boat, so I can sit down often. A bitch getting old! Turned 76 last May and way too many health issues, with two very bad falls, and surgeries including open heart. All the best everyone!

Forgot to mention we started out in 62 degree water and ran 20 miles through 63 to 65 before it started rising. 69.8 at the 312, was 72 degrees at the 209, heading home, still 20 miles from Dana Point, it rose to 73, then 74 and 75 and finally 76.3 degrees. Unreal. The kelp I hooked the Do Do on was in the 76 degree dirty, filthy water. He had friends, but they sank out. Couldn't blame them, I wouldn't swim in that water either!

Next time maybe try a stick bait or a small colt sniper with upgraded hooks

Nice to see a post from you Cory! You own this message board!

Kudos to LJ for giving those sea legs a stretch. Exciting day on the water despite the bluefin blues.

BTW - I give you credit every time I dunk that rod tip into the water and my mossback swims free of the kelp! Appreciate you, man!

Good to have you aboard Tunaslam!

I gaffed his Dorado in the shoulders (bad shot) just wanted to get one one the boards. I wasn't fishing, just waiting with the gaff. Saw about 10 dorado swimming around in the five minute period. After that nothing.

Cory's discription of the day was accurate. I figured I used 30 gallons of fuel which would be the 90 Miles. Good guess.

If anyone is planning on fishing inshore for these BF, please don't be running and gunning all over the place. It ain't gonna do any good, you're only going to piss off other people. :Beat_Them

When gaffed the Do Do twisted and flopped again and again, thought it would hop over the rail. That's why the hole was so big.

LJ is right slide softly into a school and avoid other boat traffic. We passed many a kelp paddy in the area holding bait, of which the schools of tuna erupted on. Given a second shot we would soak baits near these paddies figuring eventually the BF would find the bait. BTW just 4 miles off Dana the water temp was 74 in clear blue water amazing considering all the red tide in the area and leaving in 62 degree water?

What the heck, looks like a shotgun blast :hali_ruahahaha: . Poor girl's screaming "fuck that hurts" :D ...

I made a cheep gaff that works great for small fish when needed. Last year not one miss on the Dorado. Nailed most in the head. Didn't wait for the money shot as I just wanted it on the boat so we could get another line in the water to catch more. Unfortunately the fish freaked on deck and got torn up.

Although this is not a shot of where the gaff initially made contact, Photo shows John sticking it under the gill plate for the shot.

I pride myself for head shots, first try. Otherwise I would not have even responded to you humor. Yes, Cory's fish was hurting for sure and lacked the good meat he deserved.
