I’m currently using a phenix psw 809h with either a Trinidad 16a or Talica 8ii as my go to 30lb bait set up. I been wanting to try out some United composite rods. I have my eye on the 8ft mega but I’m not sure if I should go RCE elite or the GUSA series.
Any input greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I prefer the CE800Monster for 30# duties. Felt that the mega was a little light on 30, especially as the fish get bigger than typically schoolies. I also prefer having a rod with a glass tip when fishing bait and smaller hooks.

I have a 7'6" US Tilefish Jr. paired with a Penn Torque 25 nld2 that I really like for 30# work. Feel this rig will handle anything you could ask of 30# leader. If I was purchasing now I would get the 8'0" US Tilefish Jr., I really love my 8'0" US Terminator, which I use with a Torque 30/2 for 40# leader. The 8'0" length casts a 'dine really well, and is great for working larger model Tuna.

The 80 mega in all the lines are parabolic rods, but the US and definitely the GP have more power than the RCE. The tilefish jr is a faster taper rod which shuts off quicker. Another option would be a US or Gp 85 phantom. It basically has a mega tip with a heavier butt section. The US 85 phantom is great for casting bait or even a smaller sniper

I caught a 160# bluefin on a Tilefish jr with a penn torque 15xnld2 last year, had to use every inch of line on the first 2 runs, the tilefish jr gave me enough rod in the last 5 circles too close the deal! 50#izor solid and a 10 foot section of Seiko 30# floro and a size 2 owner ringed mutu circle hook. Took a hour and 30 minutes. I got extremely lucky!

That's one hell of a catch on that setup with 30lb Tom! Shows how great the tilefish Jr is on big fish and what the torque 15xnld2 can do. I use that exact same setup. Good to know it can handle fish up to that size. Very impressive sir!

We were catching 30-40 pound bluefin during the day at the Cortez, and they were only eating light line and small hooks, I had just caught a 30# model on that same rod and reel, when I hooked that fish, I immediately knew I was probably getting spooled! I had maybe 5 feet of line left when I was able to get his head turned, then he almost spooled me again after getting 150 yards of line back. It's fishing, sometimes things go your way, sometimes not. At the end,I was able to get a half turn of the handle each circle. I almost shit when the gaffs struck home. I was lucky indeed!

I have the UC GP80 mega paired with a tranx 400 - great for fishing around the island and handles small snipers and plastics well. I also have 8ft Del mar paird with a tranx 500 for YT.

I see to many guys watch the fish do circles and do nothing. Every time that Rod tip lifts a little reel down and every circle when they’re closest to the boat. Well done on that fish

I just purchased and used a couple weeks back the GP Tilefish Jr for 30lb. Caught bluefin up to 60lbs and the rod worked great. Some people like to go 40 on this rod but I liked it for 30. I use the GP Mega for 25.

That drives me crazy watching somebody not pulling hard, and having his fish walk him around the boat until something bad happens!
