Fished Newport Bay this morning with one of our Berkley sales reps. The morning started out slow, no water movement. After the high slack, the water started moving and we started hooking spotted bay bass on #6 Trilene and 3" Gulp Shrimps in new penny with 3/8 Owner bullet lead heads. Fishing one of the back channels, Mickey hangs into a screamer- whoa, possibly a big bonita back here? Comes up flashing silver, its a freaking bonefish. 30 years fishing this bay and never seen one. Was about a 2 lb fish and put upo a great fight. Worked our way home for several halibut to 4.5 lbs and lost a bat ray. Fun morning before work. The key to fishing the Gulp shrimp was bounce it ever so slowly along the bottom. Watch for strikes on the sink too.

Excellent post, Bob. Glad to learn all I can about fishing these Gulps.

BTW, Thanks so much for the package you sent. You were way more than generous (I was stoked) and I'll be donating some of the packs to the Oceanside Angler's Club monthly meeting raffle (5/2/06) on behalf of Bob Hoose and Pure Fishing.

You guys are a class act. :appl:

    Calling BS without pictures!

I've always heard the rumors, but never believed them. Good job. How far back were you? all the way back by Jamboree/San Diego creek or closer to the PCH bridge?

Those Gulp shrimp have tricked almost as many bonefish for me in SD Bay as the 2" clear red flake grubs slathered in Pro-cure Shrimp flavored bait butter. Those fish are one hell of alot of fun, I picked up a 10' ultralite outfit spooled with 4lb. on a little shimano spinning reel, and have spent hours out there with SCREAMING drags.

    Good-times Good-times.

    Stanley-

I'd like to get out there to the meeting on the 2nd. I'll get more info from you on this.

    Here's a close-up of the bonefish:

Bob, thanks again for inviting me. I had no idea that catch would become such a big deal. And I don't know if I told you, but that was only the fourth halibut I've ever caught. It wasn't a bad fight either.

    See you tomorrow.

Nice bonefish, I saw large one in Newport about two weeks ago after the rain. He was cruising the surface in the harbor close to the Newport Shipyard. WEll LOOKS like they are moving in????

The DFG did some experimental stocking program back in the 60's I read some where. The stocked Newport bay with Bone fish, Lady fish and Striped Bass.
