Going out next weekend on the big X for a 3 dayer.
I was wondering if anyone has heard how the fishing for yellers has been at Punta Colnett, San Martin? Water temps?
I'm assuming this would be our "range" for a trip of this length.

I just finished packing my gear for the trip on the XL leaving this Thursday. Is this the trip you are on? If not, I'll let you know where we went.

I'll be on the boat this Thursday also.
My best guess on what we do after leaving the bait tanks around 1PM Thursday:

    1. Head to San Quintin/San Martin Island for Friday fishing, looking for yellowtail, lingcod, reds and maybe white seabass.
Fish Punta Colonet on Saturday for yellowtail, ling cod and reds.

    2. Head to the Cortez Banks for Bluefin and yellowtail on Friday.
Fish Punta Colonet on Saturday for yellowtail, ling cod and reds.

I plan on bringing a 20lb, 30lb, 40lb, and 50lb outfits on this trip for any of the above options.
Plan on bringing the big ice chest for this trip!

Hi Leonard, looking forward to seeing you on the trip. I'm bringing way too much! 7 rods, blah. You'd think I was getting ready for a 10 day, but hey it's not going to do me any good sitting at home!

I don't think they'll be able to fish Cortez / Tanner banks if we have rock fish in the holds, the water gets too deep out there and there would be no way to prove that the rockfish were caught legally to the DFW.
At least the last time I fished that area in December, they didn't let us keep any rock fish because of that.

no youd have to go to tanner/cortez first then down south. frankly i dont think theyll burn the fuell to do that. my guess would be yt/rock fish at san martin and maybe halibut in the cove too. then collonett or possibly san geronimo the next day ect.

I listed two options for fishing on Friday and Saturday.
    Hopefully we do option #1.
Looking for halibut on this trip would be a bonus.

There are bft around off Ensenada and banks Offshore. No one has really tried to fish for them. It wouldnt surprise me if the Excel might just be the ones to break the ice to our south on one these 3 day trips

Tons of yellowtail all the way down the coast. I recommend 6x size jigs minimum. Wind was up and my wife, son, and I were using bait wrap squid that were between 6x and 7x in weight (red and yellow squid color worked well for us). Used a couple 7x late in the day as wind picked up. PL68 would have worked when the wind got bad but if the wind stays down a 6x size is best. I saw most colors working blue and white, mint and white, scrambled egg, all white, and the red squid was hot. If they sink out Mack on the dropper loop sometimes got bit when nothing else did. Used 12 and 16 oz weights.
