OK, Ive finally gotten started removing the out drive so I can re power my 1991 262. I've removed the 2 helmet retaining bolts, but now the sleeve won't move, how did you get yours off? Any suggestions? Volvo says there is some kind of allen wrench tool shaped tool that you work in the bolt holes to loosen the sleeve? I could make one but there has to be an easier way, anyone?

I believe the pins you are trying to remove have holes drilled and tapped in them?
If so, you need to back off the allen head set screws that are tightened into the side of both pins (once you remove the pins you will see there is a flat spot machined on the pins that the set screw makes contact with to secure them in place). Removing the pins involves obtaining a slide hammer (I bought one at harbor frieght), you thread the bolt at the end of the slide hammer into the threaded hole in the pin and use the slide hammer to back the pin out. REMEMBER to back off the two set screws first. Also, it is very important to shore up the outdrive with some wood to keep it from crashing down once the pins are pulled out.

Hope we are talking about the same thing here.

If not, could you post up some pix of what your trying to remove.

are you talking about the pivot pin (little round stainless part that the helmet pivots on)
if so its probably just held on by corrosion once you remove the allens it should come off i had to put both of the allens back (part way in ) i then put a small break bar between them so that i could get some leverage to twist it free i mite have heated the stainless a little to help

i hope this was helpful

If its the pins as was previosly suggested i believe the allens that lock them in place will also thread into the ends of the pins
i did that and then tightened them and got the pins to spin ,then lubed them with wd and slowly spun them out

again hopefully theres something helpful in there

Do you need to remove the outdrive to pull the engine? On my '94 VP 262 with a minimum of 6" front end clearance I can disconnect the engine from the outdrive shaft and hoist out (I removed components off the front of engine to make that clearance)

There should be two holes in the steering pin in addition to the two counterbores for the allen bolts. The other two holes are threaded, and you can alternately screw in two bolts to push the pin out. My manual said they were M6, but they were actually 1/4-20. I'm going thru this now to figure out why I have a knock/rattle noise after changing the cone clutch.

I want to change the bellows and check the bearing, and since the boat was left in the water it needs to be cleaned up.
