Hi there,

Im in the market for a new to me boat. This one caught my eye. From what I’ve read Sea Sports are high quality. It has a Volvo Penta 8L gi engine. I primarily fish salmon on the west coast but want to go offshore for tuna in the coming years. I’ve never owned an inboard before. I think eventually I’d put a couple 300 Evinrude G2’s on it. The inboard has 600hrs on it. What would be the average life of that engine. I put 150-200hrs on my Boats per year. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

engine life will be directly related to how it was maintained and ran.... 11 years and 600 hours is about 55 hours a year... that's not much use per year... and if it was well maintained I could see it going 1500+ hours and honestly I think closer to 3000 hours ... get a full survey on the boat and engine... if the compression and leak down tests on the engine look good and the boats in good shape go for it... and personally I think a couple of g2 300's would be sweet but I would stick with the I/O when it comes time to repower... a reman 8.1 is about $6000... so figure out the door $10,000 +/- installed... and a g2 300 about $20,000 each, a new bracket around $5000 plus the cost of closing the transom and mounting the bracket and rigging the engines.... so IMO that's an easy $50,000 (prob closer to 60K) to get repowered with the g2's... so $40,000+ difference between the two is a lot of fuel/gear $ to go fishing with... now that's my 2c you can take the info for what it cost you.

Maybe find a used diesel and freshen it up. I’d do some research and see if your outdrive will handle it or even be geared correctly. I was on a smaller sea sport with a diesel the other day. He told me his fuel burn (or lack there of) and my jaw dropped. Nice boats! Good luck.

bman is spot on above.

One other thing to consider beyond just hours is rust. from the pics it looks like it's a raw water cooled motor (couldn't see a heat exchanger in pics). no matter the hours, at some point rust will take over and become an issue.

My buddy has a Sea Sport and loves it, good boats made up in WA for rough weather. I like the layout of that one for sure.

Engine looks brand new. Why piss money away replacing it? Of course its fresh water cooled. What do you think the plastic reservoir full of green coolant in the lower right (front left of the engine) of the engine picture is for?

You might want to take a look at Parker boats with the outboards on an Armstrong platform. Changing engines out that much can cost big buck s and lots of headaches...Craigslist has a couple for sale currently..But, the interior design of the Sea Sport is sure nice if you take family out..
