I don’t usually keep BFT but Tori isn’t on this years trip so I’ll have to find someone else to ‘gift’ any BFT I happen to catch! Unless it’s >100# and I send it to my son in Oklahoma.

Hey, if anyone wants my spot I'd give it up. My son is loading his stuff in a truck on Saturday and heading out Sunday for Texas!

Seas were rough at times and we didn't have any wide open bites day or night, but put together a trip. Biggest fish was a 202 and there was a 137 and another somewhere in that range that I don't know the weight of. Another 15 or so in the 70-100 range, the rest in the 25# range. About 45-50 all told.

Best results were on a sinker rig with 6+ oz weight, most of the time the fish were 200-400 feet deep and didn't rise to the chum, so you had to get your bait down to them. The standard jigs worked somewhat, but sinker rigs worked better this trip.

The crew recommended small hooks (like #2 or 4), and for flylining that worked, but a stouter (2/0 or 3/0) were much better for bigger fish on sinker rigs. We had heavy losses because these fish were mean; for example I lost four fish by not going to bigger hooks sooner. By the end Capt Mark was calling for 60-80# line on the sinker rigs.

Most of the fishing was about 30 miles south of Pt Loma, in the bluefin pen territory (not giving away any secrets here, there were 30 boats there, LOL.

We left Friday evening and were on the grounds by about 11. A lot of people fished Friday night/Saturday morning and then fished Saturday day and were pretty wasted and didn't fish any more nights. Unless you're young and strong, I'd pick a time to fish and understand that you might miss a good bite when you're getting some sleep.

Food and crew were real good, Capt Mark was his usual self. ;)
